Barnes & Noble - Jon Wiederhorn
Although it's true that Boston neo-metal stalwarts Godsmack have already sold more than three million discs on the scaly backs of the hits "Whatever" and "Keep Away," their self-titled debut disc released in 1997 was really just the cleaned-up demo recording that got them signed. Awake is the bracing slap in the face that reveals Godsmack's true colors -- black as they might be. "I wanna know why I've always felt alone," howls vocalist Sully Erna on "Sick of My Life" as churning down-tuned guitars, throbbing bass lines, and surging drums coalesce in a maelstrom of melodic angst that's equal parts Alice in Chains, Helmet, and Metallica. "Awake" and "Bad Magick" deliver similar doses of pernicious, percussive fury, and "Vampires" combines testosterone riffage with eerie spoken-word samples in a way that's as effective as Ministry's "So What?" With the inoffensive sounds of Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty, and Creed cleaning up the charts, Godsmack provide a riveting wake-up call to those who still like their rock sprinkled with rage.
All Music Guide - Christina Fuoco
Godsmack recorded its self-titled debut for 1,500 dollars and served up a triple-platinum helping of meaty, cleverly written, pure metal. The tribal "Voodoo" was one of 2000's best singles. The first three songs of the group's sophomore effort, Awake -- "Sick of Life," "Awake," and "Greed" -- blend together unanimously into a swirl of Tony Rambola's jackhammer guitar riffs. It's the deeper cuts that are the standout tracks. The dirgy, slow groove in "Mistakes" is hook laden. One common thread between Godsmack and Awake is lead singer Sully Erna's angst-ridden lyrics. "Oh God, I'm makin' the same mistakes," he cries in "Mistakes," as Rambola's guitars encircle him. Drummer Tommy Stewart, on "Trippin'," aptly pronounces Erna's anger in "Face down/I walk away/Every time I think I do the right thing/You turn your back on me."

Their BEST album to date. Their other CDs ( the self-titled one and "Faceless") are also good to.

It was the second, and it's still the best. It completely ROCKS. Sully is not just your typical growler. His growling and sreaming actually sends shivers down my spine, and he's a pretty damn good singer, too. PICK THIS ALBUM UP, IT FLAT-OUT ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

    The First Was Better

Didn't like awake. I like there first album Godsmack. I like I stand alone. But I didn't like any of the songs on awake. All the songs sounded roughly the same and I didn't like the Cd at all I do not reccomend it to anyone.

    Could this be the beginning

Godsmack by far is one of music's best bands. With the screaming and intense vocals of Sully Erna and the great riffs and bass chords of Tony Rambola and Robbie Merill to the thundering and heart pounding drums of Tommy Stewart,....Godsmack has changed the way people listen and think about music and the world we live in. Godsmack's music tells us the story's of people lives. Their music is about human behavier that we sometimes see as dangerous, brutal, and unattractive. Everynow and then society needs a good kick in the but to show them what life is really like. How it isn't handed to you on a silver platter. It isn't something that is candy coated, fabricated, and packaged. ''Sick of Life'' is a prime example. Sometimes things don't go your way, and you just need to scream about it. Godsmack is going places. If they haven't reached the place they want to go to yet, then they will very soon!!!

    Picked It Up a Knotch

From all the lash-back the band got from their first CD, although a great album, because of their name and vox sounding so much like AIC, Sully really pulls all the stops out and shows how aggressive Godsmack can be, in their newest edition, ''Awake.'' This album's guitars and vocals have risen from the first album's, quite a bit. And while maintaining the original tone, Godsmack has sufficiently proven in their sophmore debut that they were not a flash in the pan, or a AIC rip-off, but are in fact a very potent voice in mainstream Metal.
