Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Matt Collar
Awake Live finds classical crossover vocalist Josh Groban performing on tour in support of his 2006 studio album, Awake. While that album perfectly showcased Groban's knack for epic, deeply moving adult contemporary and classical pop, like many of his studio efforts it was somewhat hemmed in by the hermetically sealed nature of the recording studio and didn't quite capture Groban's burnished, mythically romantic persona. Fortunately, Awake Live manages to best its studio counterpart with an airy, stadium feel that allows both Groban and his backing ensemble to truly soar musically. Backed by a full pop band replete with orchestral and choir members, Groban is free to let loose on the mike and the crowd reacts in kind. Never bombastic or garish, Groban is nonetheless a powerhouse vocalist and dewy pop performer who elicts audible screams from his audience. Framed by technically adroit and sweeping cinematic arrangements, Groban simply can't lose on-stage, and the result is an album that finally lives up to his gargantuan talent. [This two-disc set features a CD and DVD including bonus features.]

I saw Josh twice on the recently complete Awake World Tour, which is what this DVD is from. It was such a wonderful concert. I was not at the Salt Lake City show for the taping, but I was at the Omaha show just 3 days after this show. Josh is a wonderful peformer and if you haven't seen him live, this is the next best thing. I cannot WAIT for this to be released!

For obvious reasons, I have not seen the DVD, but I was able to attend 6 of the Awake World Tour concerts between February 2007 and September 2007. Life just doesn't get any better than attending a Josh Groban concert! His incredible voice, his love of what he is doing, and his rapport with the audience is pure joy! I am eager for the DVD to be released so that I can re-live those memories.

I also attended two shows on the Awake Tour. Completely blown away by the power and depth of this man's voice live. A real must-have for any fan of Josh Groban. And this DVD is guaranteed to win over the admiration of anyone who watches it. Be prepared for the need to buy tickets to his next album tour. Phenominal!

I spent a week going to venues in Cleveland and Columbus Ohio and also in Grand Rapid and Detroit Michigan to see Josh's Awake concert. He never fails to put on a top notch concert. I'm looking forward to his Awake Live concert on DVD

Like the previous reviewer, I went to two of his concerts. Both times were absolutely wonderful and unforgetable!! Josh's voice captures your heart and soul from the first minute! And really... you'll love this DVD concert!! and I promise... you'll be lining up for a concert of his next time!! there's no going back when you've listened to his voice... there're simply not enough words to describe it!!

I don't understand, is this the dvd of the concert that was recorded or just a cd of him singing live? i was at the concert and it was amazing! It was my first ever concert and i loved every moment of it. So, i really want to by the dvd to watch it over and over again. just curious.

I've been to one of his concerts and it was the bomb!!! Even my 17 year old brother liked it. Josh truly is the best singer on earth!!!

I was privileged to attend three (3) of Josh's Awake concerts. His incredible voice, and other talent plus showmanship make one of his concerts truly enjoyable. Did I mention his sweet and loving personality? I am a "Grobanite" and so looking forward to viewing his "Awake - Live" DVD. I get chills just listening to the "teaser".

My family and I attended three of Josh's Awake concerts. As they went on they just became more explosive. Putting on headphones and listening to Josh's CD's is pure joy, but experiencing his talent and wonderful personality live - it's a wonderful escape and the BEST of feel-good experiences.

I attended two Josh 'AWAKE' concerts, including SLC. Even his parents and managers told me the SLC concert was the BEST on the tour. The mutual energy, enthusiasm, and love shown that night was incredible. Josh ended the night with tears in his eyes and hand on his heart because he too was moved by the audience response. The DVD was filmed in high-def. Don't pass this up. Josh's power and emotion is second to none.

What an amazing opening for this amazing concert. Josh Groban who has performed already over the world, and is now, heading towards South Aferica, brings you this amazing concert. Awake, feautres Angelique Kidjo and Lucia Micarelli. Josh is an amazing person with a beautiful angelic voice. This is something you dont wanna miss. i own every single cd of his.

I also saw Josh Live during his concert tour last year. He sounds better in person than in the studio. While his voice is powerful, it also has power. The power to touch your heart and soul in a very never before experience. I am a fan for life.

I, although i am a fan of josh, had been rather dissapointed with his last live dvsd, live at the greek. it camera work was amaturish, themusic was too loud and josh voice was, dare i say it about a voice that glorious, it was awful. nasal, hoarse, strained. it left me concerned about his vocal health as well as the future of his career. i am pleased to say, all my fears are put to rest. The goosebumps are back big time. his voice is not what it was on his early albums. not quite as smooth, mellow and emotional as it was on his early recordings. i will miss that, but on the bright side his voice is bigger than ever, his range is breathtaking, his stye is astoundingly versatile and he has a power in his voice that makes you wonder why he bothers with a microphone. he is also so comfortable as a performer. he's fun. funny, and in a way i have never seen with any other singer aside from perhaps clay aiken, he is really accessible to the audience. the place is packed and yet there is something intimate about the way he relates to them, like it's just him and 15,000 of his buddies hangin' out. this will put the naysayers like myself of live at the greek to contented silence. a real treat, masterfully filmed, brilliantly performed and a wonderful show.

This is a WONDERFUL DVD project and I am quite pleased with it. For those customers who wrote in saying that Josh Groban's "Live at the Greek" sounded nasal: as a vocalist and a music producer I agree with you, but you need to keep a few things in mind. First, these LIVE DVD recording sessions have to be planned well in advance. It takes a lot of coordination to get the instrumentalists and cameras and venue site together for a DVD shoot (and weather plays a role too). Factoring that in, keep in mind that Josh is human just like all the rest of us. Some days you wake up and your allergies or sinuses affect your singing voice. Should he have canceled the DVD taping after lining up all the musicians, crew members, cameramen, and sound techs (especially when they had arranged their schedules to come together and make the DVD video shoot happen--and they expect to be paid for their time)? It's a toss up! The second thing you have to ask is this--given that Josh was not in top vocal quality on the night of the taping, should he have chosen to re-shoot the DVD and spend thousands if not millions of dollars for a "do-over"? That's a waste of money. Part of what comes with a LIVE taping is the difference between a LIVE project and a studio project. In a LIVE DVD project you get what you get vocally (sure, some tweaks can be made in editing, but the taping of the concert is in real time). In a studio project you have much more flexibility. There is no way that Josh could have known in advance that his voice would not be in top shape on the night of the shooting. But as the consummate professional he is, the show must go on.

There are always excuses for everything, even for Josh Groban singing in concert!

I was AT the concert this DVD was filmed at and at the VERY TOP (nose-bleed) seats in the Delta Center, but it was SOOO worth it to see JG in concert!! This CD/DVD reminds me of that great experience. I play it all the time!!!
