Wow what an absolutely amazing debut book. I totally fell in love with the original plot and remarkable characters. Characters will have you laughing, cheering them on and crying for them. This is a surprisingly awesome book that made me feel I was right alongside them as they battle supernatural beings, fall in love & have heart wrenching moments. Also look for some amazing side characters to pop in that leave you in shock over who they are. I only had one problem with this book, it ended.

This story takes everything I love about paranormal suspense and beautiful love to make a great read. Lucy is honest and real. She reacts like a normal person would when faced with conflict (emotional and physical). The supporting characters are integral and so fascinating that I want to know their backstory too. I enjoy a book that makes me feel emotionally attached to the characters. I laughed and cried while reading this book. I'm very much looking forward to book 2.

Awaken was such a good book. I laughed at times with this book (`crap on a cracker' is now a fav phrase for me) and I even cried towards the end of the story (my heart was just broken!) Ross did an excellent job with her debut book and I really look forward to more and more from her. And if you don't already believe in soul mates, read Awaken and you just might!

A refreshing new twist on the supernatural. An excellent new take on the afterlife. It's a direction that hasn't really been taken before. I honestly cannot say enough about this book. I could NOT put it down. Normally you don't find this type of intelligence written into the characters of a YA book. I love the witty banter between the characters. The range of emotions is astounding and you really feel the drama & conflict going on around them. I highly recommend this book. It's worth the read!

Meet the Author

I started my obsession with reading at an early age, getting in trouble for sneaking BabySitter Club and Nancy Drew books into math class in elementary school. I would read any fiction book I could get my hands on. I knew it was an addiction when instead of grounding me from TV or music, my mom would take away my books as punishment (The Horror!). My love of all things paranormal was inspired by my good friend Laurie, who convinced me that books with vampires, witches, and all things shifter were amazing. After a little reluctance, I gave it a shot with the Sookie Stackhouse books, realized she was right, and the rest was history.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with my degree in English, and taught 8th graders to love reading as much as I do for several years. I will always be a proud member of the Steelers Nation, but I couldn't take the cold and moved my frozen tush to Florida where I now live with my family and two cats. You will find me now with my trusty Kindle in hand and toes in the sand!

When I'm not writing or reading, I am probably partaking in my favorite vice: sunbathing. I know it's wrong, but I love the feeling on the hot sun on my skin and could lay in it for hours. I do live in Florida for a reason!

    Too much religion!

When I read the summary, I thought that this book would be pretty interesting. It was a good idea, and the author could have made it work. However, there were too many sections about god and how he created everything. If the religious preaching sections had been less numerous, I would have enjoyed the book a lot more. Also, a lot of the writing was dedicated to the romance between Lucy and Max. I think that more of the book should have been about the rest of the storyline, instead of focusing on the romance.

What an interesting new story Sarah has written!  Took me a bit to really sink into the story, but once I did I was hooked.  I can’t wait to see what happens next.  There’s excitement, a bit of mystery, a hint of a “special” budding love, new friendships, and lots more mingling together, making for a great read.  I highly recommend this book as a to be read must have!

Awaken (Patronus #1) by Sarah M Ross

Imagine waking up in a strange room, attached to strange machines, and surrounded by strange faces. Then, imagine finding out that you died 5 months ago, have been chosen as a Patronus (guardian of souls), and are no longer on the earthly plane. Yeah, that'll make your head spin and your knees weak.

Lucy comes to learn that there are supernatural beings - vampires, werewolves, and fae - who steal souls, at the time of death, to repopulate their species. It will be her job to protect these endangered souls until a final judgement is passed and they either move up, to the Alpha, or down, to the Omega.

On, virtually, Lucy's first day out there's a breech, she's attacked, and nearly dies. Barely healed from the attack, she finds out that her sister, who has leukemia, is scheduled to be guided through in just a few days.

But Lucy is a guardian, not a guide. And when she insists on being allowed to escort her sister's soul, she is put through rigorous testing by a couple of very interesting, historical characters. One of the more amusing parts of the story.

Through all of this, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to Max, a member of her team. When he pulls away, despite what seems to be a mutual attraction, Lucy is hurt and confused. But there are more important things than romance.

Will she be approved as a Guide? Will she be able to get her sister safely to the Patroni's realm? And will anyone ever explain what's up with Max?

    ~*~*~

Recommended by a fellow Facebook group member, Awaken left me with rather mixed feelings.

The afterlife realm that Ross created is fascinating and unremarkable; unusual and ordinary. Populated with others chosen to guard the souls of the newly deceased, it is virtually identical in appearance and function to the earthly realm from which they came. I was mildly disappointed, but understood the characters' explanations.

Speaking of characters, I loved them. From different times and places, some have been Patroni for decades - or centuries. Cassie is a crack-up, Max is {sigh} dreamy, and the famous people who pop up are unexpected and great fun.

Frankly, I didn't care for the religious, somewhat preachy nature of certain passages and the extreme demonizing of supernatural beings. Grammatically, some sections could definitely have benefited from additional editing. Lastly, I would have expected Max, who died in the 1870s, and James, who is even 'older', to have slightly different speech patterns. But everyone speaks in 21st century idiom and slang.

With that said, Awaken is still a fun read. It challenges the imagination; I've never thought about what Purgatory, for lack of a better term, might be like. Ross has and has, overall, done a fine job of taking us there.

I can't wait to see what the rest of the series has to offer.

Meet Lucy, a volunteer at a local hospital, captain of her swimming team, who is intent on enjoying her last weekend with her best friend, Janice, before graduating college. Finals are almost over, and she just wants to have a relaxing weekend before joining the real world. As they are driving down the highway, her world changes faster than the speed limit.

Lucy wakes up 5 months later, and realizes she is no longer in a vehicle with Janice. But just where is she? She finds herself hooked up to tubes, and though the room does not have the typical “hospital” smell, she is certain she is either in a hospital, or the people surrounding her are trying to kill her. As Lucy states “mama didn’t raise no fool”.

Meet Cassie. Though she is able to tell Lucy how she ended up there- her car was side swiped by a drunk driver; and that her friend Janice survived the accident, what she continues to tell Lucy is hard to wrap your mind around. Can Lucy trust Cassie? Does she have much of a choice?

You soon learn that Cassie and her group, Max, Adam, James, etc, are known as the Patronus (which I will not go into detail so not to spoil anything for you); and that Lucy was “chosen”. If you didn’t believe that angels, demons, witches, and mythical creatures existed before, you will soon realize how wrong you were. But is Lucy strong enough to accept this and her new life?

Max.. the mysterious, nice looking guy that Lucy finds intriguing (and a guy I would probably be crushing on too!). But what is he hiding? Why does he seem so familiar to Lucy? Why does there seem to be a bond when she has never met him before?
Cassie never realized what kind of ride she was in for…Can the strength of the team be enough to get her through?

Let me start by saying this is another wonderful book by the lovely Sarah M.Ross. You will not be disappointed in this book.

After dying Lucy wakes up in a whole new world and finds out she's now a Patronus. She meets Max,James,Cassie and Adam who are apart of her team and teach her what a Patronus is. On the first day of class she has to help her team when a vampire slips in and trys to steal some souls. She gets attacks and nearly dies again but the handsome Max and Adam save her.
Everything is going good for Lucy until she gets horrible news about someone in her family. Throwing herself into intense training to become a guide everyone finds out she's so much better than they thought she would be. Marco and James try to keep Lucy from going to collect a soul for fear the vampires know who she is. But Lucy is determined to go at any cost.

I loved how I got sucked into this book like I was right there in the story. I laughed and cried with all the characters and my heart broke for Lucy. You will slowly fall in love with Max and wish he was real lol. Great Job Sarah!

After having this book for quite a while, I wish I would have made time for it earlier. I had a lot of fun reading Awaken. The story was your average afterlife story with quite a few twists. Incorporating vampires into the story made it a little more interesting. I like how the author gave a lot of back story about the Patroni and the characters in general. However, as much as I loved the book, it had a couple of flaws. The copy of the book that I received had quite a few spelling and grammar errors which kind of took away from the story. This might have been fixed when the book was updated. The second issue I had with the book, some people might consider a good thing. Lucy and Max’s relationship reminded me of Edward and Bella’s relationship in Twilight. Max and Lucy instantly fell in love when they met. Max is very protective of Lucy and doesn’t want her to do quite a few things for fear she will get hurt. However, unlike Bella, Lucy is a kick-ass heroine. She stands up for what she wants and won’t take no for an answer. She’s not going to let a man boss her around and tell her what to do. I think we need more heroines like Lucy in YA literature. Later in the book, you learn why Lucy and Max fall in love at first sight. It’s a cool explanation and makes up for their over the top love. The ending of the book left off on a crazy cliff hanger. I am dying to find out what happens next in Avenge.

    AMAZING

This book was definitely unique. the plot is something i haven't ever heard before. If you think this is going to be centered on angels and heaven you are mistaken. this book is about the patronus, the guides for souls. they make sure everything runs smoothly so that the souls can get to heaven without interference from werewolves, vampires or fae. the main bad guys in this story are the vampires, they collect souls to stay alive.
When our main character, Lucy, wakes up from a car crash she meets Adam, Cassie, James and Max. when they tell her she's died and has been chosen to be a Patronus she thinks there crazy but after somethings happen that she can't explain any other way she believes them. While training to start her career as a Patrouns with her team she has a run in with a vampire that ends in tragedy. through out the whole novel she has a instant connection to Max and he is a constant source of comfort when things go wrong. The ending was intense and when you finally got answers to some questions new ones would come along.
This book was fantastic and i highly recommend it. I can't until I can get the next one.

    Wonderful

This book is everyone's wish...to know when you die someone is there to take caare of you..and wonderful thoughts to hve that when you die, you are special enough to guide those souls.

This book was so special to me. Just having the possibility of seeing someone after they pass is just a calming thought. This book was written so simple and so beautiful. The description was just enough and I connected with the characters. I laughed and cried through out this book and I so can not wait to read the next book.

    Great Action

Meet newly deceased Lucy. Lucy’s fun-in-the-sun weekend is interrupted by her untimely death by a drunk driver. Lucy is a “new recruit” as a guardian, called a Patronus. Lucy and her Patronus friends “help protect the spirits of the departed” and travel across realms of time in this quick-moving young-adult novel from Sarah M. Ross.

This group of supernatural, refurbished friends battle vampires, use invisibility, and shields of protection to save souls from being stolen. Their job is dangerous and leads the Patronus friends on an adventure.

When Lucy is forced to negotiate for the soul of a familiar, she is lead to reunite with her own soul-mate, Max. The chemistry between Lucy and Max is undeniable and adds intrigue for future stories. The layering of the different story lines keeps the reader turning the pages late into the evening. The story ends abruptly leaving the reader knowing there is more to come.

Ross weaves an interesting tale with a fresh voice. I look forward to the future books coming out soon.

A fascinating unique fictitious life after death adventure.

A unique fictitious account of the after life of Lucy Donovan a college student who dies during a tragic car accident. At the start of the story the reader is immediately at Lucy's side as Lucy awakens in the afterlife. Lucy who is not aware she has passed on is immediately in panic mode wondering who the strangers are around her bed. Lucy is not only dead she has been specifically chosen by a group called the Patronus. Patronus are a special group of guardian spirits who guard and accompany other spirits after their death.

I really enjoyed this book and found the story unique and interesting until I came across vampire like demons during the story. Although I love the paranormal I just cannot get into any sort of vampire drama. I can happily say though, that I did like how Ross kept the vampire confrontations to a minimum throughout the story. I also felt Ross could have held back a little on Lucy's obsession with Max. I totally got her concept on how Lucy felt a connection with Max, but it just seemed a little bit much. I feel this is a great start for Ross, however I also feel she needs to show more strength when it comes to her depictions of the scenery, and other realms. Since this is book one for Ross she certainly has time to improve her next book. I am definitely open to reading a sequel to this book.

“Awaken” took me by surprise. Besides the stunning book cover, I also liked the concept of chosen ones becoming guardians in the afterlife to protect other spirits awaiting judgment before moving on, from being stolen by supernatural forces who wants to ensure the survival of their species. It is yet again another refreshing look at vampires, werewolves, faeries and such; although - except for the vampires – werewolves and faeries are not the main focus of this book. As I’ve had my fill of vampire and werewolf themed books, I enjoyed this one more for its take on guardians and guides in the afterlife.

Who knew that in heaven you’ll find a waiting room with magazines dated from the 1980s, a coffee station and water cooler? Even more astonishing is finding that the realm of the after-life is not much different from the world we know. Chinese takeout, all your favorite television channels, buffet breakfasts and a fully equipped spa are only some of the familiar things you’ll come across in this realm. And as wonderful as all that sounds, I was slightly disappointed that the author didn’t put a little more imagination into this. Instead, she just duplicated our world. Having a realm where anything is possible at her fingertips, I’m surprised she chose not to be more creative and wow the reader with a whole new magical world! But……that’s just me. Hopefully, the next book in the series, “Avenge”, will do all that!

I liked all the characters, and again I was so happy to find another female lead who isn’t a, whiny, spoiled little drama-queen, which you so frequently find in YA novels. Considering the new life Lucy had to embrace, and also surviving a horrendous attack soon after she arrived in her new world, she takes her duties as a Patronus (guardian) seriously. Her dogged determination and fearlessness to protect innocent souls from the evil trying to snatch them away, is remarkable to say the least. And what I wouldn’t give to have one of those cool bracelets the guardians get to wear, with which you can……no, wait, let me not spoil it for you. But trust me, you’ll also want one!

A delightful little twist to this tale is how the author worked well-known historical figures into the story. A lot of time is spent detailing the training sessions Lucy had to partake in to help her develop the skills necessary for the battles ahead of her. After said training sessions, I was as exhausted as she was since the author described it so well! She really got my adrenaline pumping and I felt ready for the fight along with Lucy. I felt giddy knowing we’re ready to go and kick some vampire butt!

This quick, well-written read will definitely appeal to the young adult market of readers aged 16 and up. “Awaken” is the first book in a new series that will definitely knock your socks off!

    Review:
This book captivated me from the very first couple pages! I instantly thought hmmm...well this is a interesting start...and I could not wait to finish it! I loved the twist in it and the fact that even there was a little romance it was not the only story in this book! The reason behind they're amazing pull is captivating on it's own!!! However this book leaves you wanting more and your mouth hung open at the end wanting to know what happened next! You may even find yourself trying to make the next pages appear even though they don't exist! I really look forward to the continuance of this story to find out how well Lucy will grow and where her relationship will lead her! Thank you Sarah M Ross for this wonderful book! 5 Stars!

    Unique story

Sarah M. Ross has a fresh voice and story to add to the paranormal realm of books. Her writing is imaginative and intriguing. She has a very creative story and has presented it in a captivating manner.

Lucy is off to have a fun weekend. She doesn't know what happens to her when she wakes to a strange room and unfamiliar people. She soon discovers that she was in an accident and she has passed away. Her body was brought to another realm and revived. The process took 5 months. She is now a Patronus. The job of a patronus is to protect the souls of the newly dead and bring them to a safe spot where they can wait to receive judgement.

The job has some serious danger involved. The vampires, werewolves, and fairies all want to steal the souls before they are taken to the waiting area. These paranormal creatures are dying out and take the souls to increase their numbers.

She finds herself working with a team. There are several teams that cover areas all over the world. They have a rough job, but they have a great rapport in the team. They are friends and very supportive of each other. It doesn't hurt that one of the guys is incredibly handsome and makes her heart flutter. His name is Max and she is instantly drawn to him. There is some secret. There and a reason, but no one wants to give her the information she craves. She knows her feelings and sudden attraction are not normal.

This book is very engaging and easy to get lost in. I liked the characters. I really liked Lucy and Max. They have an undeniable chemistry. I would only recommend this book to those who are 16 or older. The main characters range in age from 22 to over 900. The ending is abrupt and lets you know that this is the beginning of the story. The next book is scheduled for later this year. There is swearing and the use of the "f" bomb.

I received a copy to review through my participation with a book tour for this book. This does not alter my opinion.
