Overview

Running away from home was never Chloe Kowalski's plan. Neither was ending up the target of killers, or having her body change in unusual ways. She only wanted a vacation, someplace far from her crazy parents and their irrational fear of water. She only wanted to do something normal for once, and maybe get to know her best friend's hot stepbrother a bit better at the same time.

But the first day she goes out on the ocean, strange things start to happen. Dangerous things that should be impossible. Things to which 'normal' doesn't even begin to apply.

Now madmen are hunting her. A mysterious guy with glowing blue eyes is following her. And her best friend's stepbrother seems to be hiding secrets all his own.

It was supposed to be a vacation. It's turning out to be a whole lot more.

Meet the Author

Skye Malone is a fantasy and paranormal romance author, which means she spends most of her time not-quite-convinced that the things she imagines couldn't actually exist.

Born and raised in central Illinois, she hopes someday to travel the world — though in the meantime she’ll take any story that whisks her off to a place where the fantastic lives inside the everyday. She loves strong and passionate characters, complex villains, and satisfying endings that stay with you long after the book is done. An inveterate writer, she can’t go a day without getting her hands on a keyboard, and can usually be found typing away while she listens to all the adventures unfolding in her head.

Skye also writes YA urban fantasy under the name Megan Joel Peterson, and is the author of The Children and the Blood trilogy. You can follow her at www.skyemalone.com or www.meganjoelpeterson.com.

I don't actively seek after "mermaid" books. There, I've said it. Regardless, I've read at least a handful through the years. They typically follow the expected rules of The Little Mermaid or Splash, but this one had its own world building and specific mythology, which was pretty darn cool. The first sentence started with a hook, and the strangeness of Chloe's life is instantly engaging. The plot carried me forward at a good pace, and yes, there were twists. Very unexpected ones near the end. Totally got me. This book has the same appeal as Josephine Angelini's STARCROSSED, except with mermaids. If you enjoy paranormal or myth based stories, this is probably a winner for you. Content warning: Clean.

Title : Awaken. ( Awakened Fate Book 1 ) Author : Skye Malone Reviewed by : Stephanie Jordan Chloe still in school, grew up in Reidsburg , Kansas an only child, who had weird parents. You see I love the Ocean, I crave the Ocean, books, pictures anything I could get my hands on about the Ocean I had to read or see it. But like I said my parents were weird they were both scared of water, not one parent both of them. I couldn't even go to the local swimming pool, let alone go to the Ocean. My friend, Baylie's family was going to the Ocean and invited me to go along. Now what do you think my parents said? Your right no, the Ocean is full nasty bacteria, man eating sharks, sea creatures. Is this fair,I just need to go, so Idid the only thing I could. I packed a bag and sent out the window. Baylie and Daisy her dog were in her car waiting for me, Ocean here I come. I was so excited all I could do is look at the water, it was calling me, I had to go in. Baylie's stepbrother's Noah and Maddox took us out on the boat. I was in Heaven I felt so calm , relaxed I just can't believe I'm finally here. Then Maddox stopped and turn the boat off, he wanted to go for swim. I can't swim what am I going to do? Than all of a sudden something started happening to the boat it was jerked from side to side , pitching forward and I fell out. OMG I can't swim and I was sinking deeper and deeper my body something was happening to my body. Then a hand grabbed my arm. He was swimming under water. He than looked over me and swam away. Noah grabbed me and we went up broke through the top. I was so scared but yet it's like I belong. This is Chloe's Adventure it is a must read! I was gifted this ARC for a honest and truthful review.

Awesome lore, thrilling story, and tons of characters to adore...I just loved Awaken! I admit, I wasn't sure what to expect with this one and I am so glad I gave it a shot because I really loved it!! With Chloe as our main character, I liked getting to discover everything as she did. There were a lot of moments I felt bad for her, but also commend her for being persistent in what she wanted and knew she needed. I'm looking forward to finding out more about her in future books! I adored Noah right from the start. Hello, he has my blonde hair and green eye combo...insta-win for me! On top of that though, Noah is an all-around good guy. He listens, he likes to do outdoorsy things, and he's protective. Just adored Noah and his adorable sweetness and hope to see much, much more of him in future books.  Zeke, I have to give it to him for being awesomely persistent. Regardless of not knowing Chloe, he still saves her at every chance he gets and has her best interest at heart. I know we'll get to see more of him in book two and I'm looking forward to getting to know this sexy sea boy.  I really liked the story that Skye created in Awaken. It's a topic we know and love but with new lore thrown in that made the story so much more interesting and I loved trying to figure it all out along the way. There even was a thrill factor that made the story even more gripping through the pages. Overall, I was super impressed with this one and I cannot wait to get my hands on the second one!

There honestly could NOT have been a better title for this book! I love the mystical and magical elements that the author made seem totally normal to the reader. Apparently there is a whole world out there that is unbeknownst to all of us and although Zeke is aware of it, Chloe is not. She cannot figure out why she is drawn towards the water and yet her parents cannot get far enough away from it. Chloe is scared of what Zeke knows at first, but begins to understand as she becomes more aware of herself and who she REALLY is - a Dehaian, a fish. This however is not your typical mermaid novel, it is totally different from what I expected in a really good way! I love the characters in the book and the way that the romance does not get in the way of the storyline. Zeke and his piercing blue eyes are amazing :) I know that I would not be able to resist his charms. Suddenly the reader is thrust into the middle of this newfound life that Chloe has and the fact that she is being targeted by suspicious creatures she knows nothing about. And every time we think we now know the whole story about what is happening BOOM another bomb drops and the reader is in shock again! Definitely action-packed and well worth a read! Can't wait for the second book in the series :) ***I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for my open and honest review***
