Overview

"Engrossing and captivating. A true page-turner."
-Mary Wine, Acclaimed author of Highland Heat

A man from another time...

Faelan is from an ancient clan of Scottish Highland warriors, charged with shielding humanity from demonic forces. Betrayed and locked in a time vault, he has been sleeping for nearly two centuries when spunky historian Bree Kirkland inadvertently wakes him. She's more fearsome than the demon trying to kill him, and if he's not careful, she'll uncover the secrets his clan has bled and died to protect...

Could be the treasure she's been seeking all her life...

When Bree inherits an old treasure map, she discovers a warrior buried in her backyard. But the warrior isn't dead. Bree shocks Faelan with her modern dress and her boldness, and he infuriates Bree every time he tries to protect her.

With demons suddenly on the move, Bree discovers that Faelan's duty as protector is in his blood, and that her part in this fight was destined before she was born. But nothing is ever what it seems...

"An exciting, riveting read! Nothing's sexier than a timetraveling Highland warrior except one with the mission to save the world and the contemporary, courageous woman who lights his fire! A page-turner, I couldn't put the book down!"
-Terry Spear, Author of Heart of the Wolf, A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Clenney's Scottish paranormal debut is full of twisty subplots and sexy, romantic fun. Bree Kirkland opens a vault in her family's old burial grounds near Albany, N.Y., and finds a handsome, kilt-wearing Scottish warrior. Faelan claims to come from a clan charged with protecting the human race from demons, one of which turned the tables in 1860 and locked him in a time vault for 150 years. The evil spirit, Druan, is still hanging around, planning to dispatch the entire human race with a deadly virus—and Bree suspects that his human form is her ex-fiancé. Faelan is forbidden to marry outside his clan, but that doesn't stop them from falling head over heels as Bree discovers her own inner warrior. Though the story is occasionally cluttered, there's plenty to keep readers looking ahead to the sequels. (May)

    Little to steamy for me

This is the first book I have read by Anita Clenney and I found the story to be very interesting. For me the only big problem was that it was a to steamy for me. I don't mind one or two love scenes but I don't really like it to be half the book, its just not what I like to read.

Faelan is 150 years old and just been awaken from a time vault. He tries to kill the woman who has awaken him, but it was just a reaction to being in the vault. He thought he had only been in the time vault for just a few days but soon realized that the world that he once new is gone and a whole new world is before him. Women are brazen and bold, people drive cars instead of riding horses, etc. All he knows is that he must find the demon that put him in the time vault before he can unleash a deadly virus.

Bree was just searching for buried treasure when she accidentally woke Faelan from the time vault. Now she has a warrior living with her that is 150 years old but still looks very young. She is not sure what the think of him, but he is very handsome in his kilt that its hard to not be drawn to him. Faelan's appetite for more than just food has them in each others arms more than once and she has no clue why she keeps letting him have his way with her. His protective streak is always making her angry because she can take care of herself and when she finds out about the demons she is ready to take them on right beside Faelan. Faelan on the other hand wants her to stay out of the way and let him take care of things.

They track down his clan in Scotland and its time to go demon hunting.

I really loved the characters in the story, from main characters to the secondary characters. Bree is very much the modern woman. She is tough, bold and has no problem taking care of herself and she can't stand the fact that Faelan wants to treat her like a weak, frail woman who need to be protected. Faelan is from a time when women stayed at home and took care of the children and the home. They didn't go off fighting demons! It drives him crazy that Bree keeps jumping into the danger instead of letting him protector, he is a warrior, its what he does. Faelan sounds like a very sexy, strong hero, and he has a lot to learn about modern women.

I haven't really read many warrior/demon books but I really did like this book and would have rated it a little higher if it wasn't for the parts I didn't like. I think if you like books like this then you will love to read this book.

    A bit difficult to read

Very interesting paranormal romance and I stuck with it to the end. But I found it "choppy", lacking smooth transition between all the plots and subplots. Lots of cliffhangers while you are jerked away to be introduced to other seemingly unrelated characters and plots. I found it very frustrating and detracted from my reading pleasure. I hope her other books have overcome this fault.

This is an engaging romantic urban fantasy

On her family estate near Albany, New York, Bree Kirkland opens a graveyard vault. Inside is Faelen who claims he belongs to an ancient Scottish warrior clan whose mission is to protect humanity from demons. He explains that Druan the demon incarcerated him back in 1860 in this tomb. Her clothing and her fighting spirit surprises him as he has no history of a female like her; his reaction matches his wearing a kilt stunning her.

Meanwhile Druan plans to release a virus to eradicate humanity. Based on his description of the enemy, Bree believes her former fiancé, who is acting strange, may be Druan. Faelen and Bree team up to prevent an extinction event from happening even as they fall in love, a taboo by his clan.

This is an engaging romantic urban fantasy as the twenty-first century feisty female stuns the highlander she has awakened with her wardrobe and attitude. The story line is fast-paced and filled with exciting twists. The couple's reactions to each other make for an entertaining save the world thriller, as Bree and Faelen united by love take on the diabolical Druan the demon with the stake being the human race.

    Great Read

I was traveling and downloaded this book to my nook without have the benefit of reading the reviews but I'm glad I did! It was a very interesting book with a lot of plot twists and turns keeping you guessing. I really can't say anything better than the other reviewers said but I will point out that one reviewer says it was "a little too steamy" for her but there are NOT half as many love scenes in this book as there are other romance novels that I've read and the three or four love scenes that are in this book are NOT steamy at all (they are around a PG13 compared to other urban or historical romances). They are barely a page or so and do not use any explicit or vulgar language which is fine with me but if you are looking for a hot, steamy romance novel this is not the book for you. I only bring this up because if hot and heavy romance is not your style you may not read this book based on that one review and it really doesn't center around sex at all. So if you are looking for a page-turner of a book with a some romance thrown in...give this one a try!

Awaken the Highlander is a breathtaking story where there are no coincidences, only destiny.

The great Faelan Connor was one of Michael's fiercest Scottish warriors over a century ago, but after he was betrayed and locked in a time vault by an evil demon he was assigned to eliminate, no one heard from him again.until Bree Kirkland inadvertently releases him while searching for lost treasure.
When Faelan awakes to the twenty first century, much has changed, including the way women dress and act. Not know who is working for the demon Druan or how to navigate in this new world, Faelan must depend on Bree.
Each distrusting the other, expecting the worse, begin an intricate dance of suspicion and desire , but when an old enemy reveals itself they must put their doubts aside and work together to save mankind from the fires of Hell.

Awaken the Highlander is the first novel in Anita Clenney's new Connor Clan series and what an incredible start! Highlanders, demons, angels and even vampires kept me glued to the pages of this spellbinding tale. The story follows the ancient warrior Faelan Connor and the treasure hunting, Bree Kirkland. Together they are an explosive couple with sizzling chemistry, but their relationship is rife with distrust, secrets and misconceptions that turned into an emotional roller coaster for characters and reader alike. However, their deep passion leads to scorching tension and steamy romance, which proceeds to a few sigh worthy love scenes. Bree, a female version of Indian Jones, with the same drive, stubbornness and sense of dry, sarcastic humor, was an engaging leading lady. While Faelan, the hot-kilted warrior, has everything I seek in an alpha hero. Bursting with honor, protectiveness, possessiveness and fierce in battle with a deep sense of justice and loyalty *sigh* Wouldn't it be nice to find him in your backyard? I loved the back and forth dialogue between these two, Faelan trying to protect Bree but Bree is a 21st century independent woman and will not sit by while Faelan fights. There was also plenty of humor with Faelan trying to figure out this time; how some things have changed and some haven't.

I was bombarded with questions throughout this novel though and by the end I was left with plenty unanswered, hopefully in the second novel though some of them will be. It did keep me on the edge of my seat, turning the pages, to find out what was happening. There were also numerous new characters and roles introduced in a very short time span, which got a wee bit confusing at times but I loved every moment! Incredibly shocking twists and turns that kept me guessing and had me turning the pages faster and faster. The author really took her time weaving a sensational tale masterfully. Plenty of intense suspense, action and battle scenes to keep adrenaline junkies entertained; with a unique, fast paced plot that is in depth and well development. All the characters introduced were rich and I easily became invested in each.

Awaken the Highlander was a great start to a new series and I cannot wait for the rest, especially since seeing the blurb for the third novel and all I have to say is *squee* I just knew it! The ending left a cliffhanger but not a frustrating one; it's a good set up for secondary characters becoming future lead characters.
An awesome read for highlander and paranormal romance fans!

    Highlanders, Time-traveling, and Paranormal Twists

A MAN FROM ANOTHER TIME . . . Faelan is from an ancient clan of Scottish Highland warriors, charged with shielding humanity from demonic forces. Betrayed and locked in a time vault, he has been sleeping for nearly two centuries when spunky historian Bree Kirkland inadvertently wakes him. She's more fearsome than the demon trying to kill him, and if he's not careful, she'll uncover the secrets his clan has bleed and died to protect . . .

COULD BE THE TREASURE SHE'S BEEN SEEKING ALL HER LIFE . . . When Bree inherits an old treasure map, she discovers a warrior buried in her backyard. but the warrior isn't dead. Bree shocks Faelan with her modern dress and her boldness, and he infuriates Bree every time he tried to protect her.

With demons suddenly on the move, Bree discovers that Faelan's duty as protects is in his blood, and that her part in this fight was destined before she was born. But nothing is ever what it seems . . .

He's had centuries to dream of her...Miss-adventurous historian Bree Kirkland discovers a one hundred fifty year old warrior buried in a crypt behind her house. But Faelan, the warrior, isn’t dead. When this chauvinistic Scottish Warrior awakes, he has no choice but accept the help of this modern-day woman who’s rescued him, but she’s more fearsome than the demon trying to kill him. If he’s not careful, she’ll uncover every secret his clan has bled and died to protect.

You would think I would have only high praise for this book, b/c it has highlanders, time-traveling, and paranormal twists (Yayy!), but NO . . . sadly Awaken the Highlander Warrior was lacking for me. It mostly lacked that certain something I highly enjoy in highlander books - a good detailed character development from a confident Scottish lead, but Faelen was just too uncertain in his actions and doubtful about his modern-day life that he didn't really appeal to me much throughout the tale. Couldn't say I was enthusiastic about the other lead as well since Bree was actually ALL OVER THE PLACE with the obsessive demons, family history, and her crazy ex-boyfriend that I couldn't really grasp her overall trajectory in the story before she was on her next harebrained adventure. Sometimes that whole careless erratic manner works for certain characters, but not for Faelan and Bree. All in all, the romance was okay, but nothing truly exciting. On a side note: I feel like I've been reading some bombs lately and that I need to pick up something that pops soon to re-spark my reading taste before I go into a dry spell . . . ek!!

Likes: There were some spooky graveyard parts that did create a nice dark creepy mood for the reader and I wish there was more of that.

Dislikes: The cover just cracks me up!
I mean . . . how much more RANDOM detailing could one book have:

    1. Buff Highlander in Kilt
    2. Tribal Tattoo on Chest
    3. Tartan Armband with Tassel
    4. Sword & Glowing Talisman
    5. Full Moon in a Purple Sky
    6. Crackling Lighting
    7. Misty Graveyard with Mausoleum & Crows
    8. Stone Archway
    9. Gaslight Post

    Enjoyed

Have enjoyed some time travel romances not into the paranormal romances. Once I read past the first 70pages, which I almost went on to another, everything fell into place. I could not figure out why this was taking place in America, then the author explained. I was so mad at the Hero for telling Bree to leave Scotland, knowing she would go straight home and not to Florida to her Mom's. He just placed her right back into Druan's arms. Overall Would recommend.
