"Awakening" begins when a man woke up, only to find himself in a strange circumstance. He feels quite disoriented in this unfamiliar place. This man has no memories of his life before now. It could have been amnesia caused by some traumatic event. There existed many reasonable possibilities that could have explained his present predicament. Was he in a building when it collapsed? Was there a fire or some terrorist activity that would explain his current surroundings? Why did he appear to have been merely injured, while stranded amidst so many dead bodies and rubble? My favorite part of this short story was the man's psychological transformation. He progressed from raw emotions and reactivity, rapidly to actions of self preservation. And, what were those sketchy men by the locked door talking about, anyway? Revealing the mystery would ruin the tale, so I refuse to do it. Read it, and find out for yourself. This short story was action-packed, to say the least. And, the intensity was palpable until the last page. The tension was mostly psychological, with some physical activity to balance the story line. Meanwhile, character development was sufficient to keep the story moving. The writing was good. It was a refreshing change from the usual predictability found in so many short stories these days. This one was good enough that I would pay a to read it. I was ecstatic to find something so unique and well written for free on my Nook. I will definitely read more of this author's work. Highly recommended to horror fans! -AvidReader

(KL) Story of vampires which is not of interest to me so two stars only. Even though it was a mere 30 plus pages, wasn't worth my time.
