Overview

In this remarkable book, John Welshons weaves together his own personal awakening with those of others he’s counseled to create a deeply felt and beautifully expressed primer on dealing with grief. Grieving, says Welshons, offers a unique opportunity to develop deeper and fuller life experiences, to embrace pain in order to open the heart to joy. Written for those who have experienced any kind of loss — death, divorce, or disappointment — this book offers reasonable, reassuring thinking on dealing with the death of loved ones and ourselves, finding the inner gifts that promote healing, and much more. Awakening from Grief takes a rare and compelling positive look at a subject needlessly viewed as one of the most negative in life. This is a persuasive primer on drawing the joy out of grief.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Welshons's book characterizes grief as a journey to one's self that one achieves by passing through the doors of sadness. Grief includes, but is not limited to, the mourning associated with death and takes the form of avoiding unpleasantness or disappointment. "Our entire culture," the author writes, "is built on maximizing pleasure through the systematic avoidance of grief" by avoiding, busying, distracting, and/or numbing ourselves. The energy we consume in avoidance detracts from our ability to embrace life's downs as well as its ups. Embracing tragedy, disappointment, and unpleasantness "can become the groundwork for tremendous growth and insight" in life. These opportunities-catalysts in disguise-provide a chance for "aliveness," "awareness," and "enthusiasm" to break through. Welshons, a student of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, previously self-published this title and sold 17,000 copies; his clear, direct style will hook readers. Highly recommended for all libraries. A Book That Should be Read by Everyone, Not Just Those Grieving

This is a beautifully written book. It was a joy to read, and I felt as if I was looking into the soul of the author himself. Welshon has an uncanny ability to give you that 'soul experience' without his physical presence. Perhaps that is why he is so good at helping you understand that you can continue the relationship with the person that has left this life. In the sudden and tragic loss of my son to suicide, I was devastated. Welshon's ability to wind the spiritual with the practical was very helpful. His analogy of our cultures weakness in the way it deals with death is right on the money. His use of the spiritual, while not becoming religous, is refreshing. This is a book that everyone should read because this book about grief and death will teach you how to live.

The Finest Book I've Read on This Subject

Awakening from Grief by John E. Welshons is an extraordinary exploration of a very difficult subject. It is an excellent roadmap for finding the way through all of the unwanted, unexpected losses and disappointments that come our way in life. Mr. Welshons is a gifted writer who will both move and inspire you. While much of what is on the market in this genre is either too academic, or too superficial, this book took me by the hand and guided me into emotions that I otherwise would not have had the courage to experience. It is heartfelt, deep, beautifully written, and truly helpful. I promise it will help you to make sense of so many things that make our lives confusing and difficult. It will help you to find real happiness and it will make your life better!
