Chapter One

September 4
-Dear Diary,

Something awful is going to happen today.

I don't know why I wrote that. It's crazy. There's no reason for me to be upset and every reason for me to be happy, but...

But here I am at 5:30 in the morning, awake and scared. I keep telling myself it's just that I'm all messed up from the time difference between France and here. But that doesn't explain why I feel so so lost.

The day before Yesterday, while Aunt Judith and Matgaret and I were driving back fromthe airport, I had such a strange feeling. When we turned onto our street I suddenly thought,"Mom and Dad are wait for us at home. I bet they'll be on the front porch, or in the living room looking out the window. They must have missed me so much."

I know. That sounds totally crazy.

But even when I saw the house and the empty front porch I still felt that way. I ran up the steps and I tried the door and knocked with the knocker. And when Aunt Judith unlocked the door I burst inside and just stood in the hallway listening expecting to hear Mom coming down the stairs or Dad calling from the den.

Just then Aunt Judith let a suitcase crash down on the floor behind me and sighed a huge sigh and said, "We're home." And Margaret laughed. And the most horrible feeling I've ever felt in my life came over me. I've never felt so utterly and completely lost.

Home. I'm home. Why does that sound like a lie!

I was born here in Fell's Church. I've always lived in this house, always. This is my same old bedroom with the scorch, mark on the floorboards where Caro, line and I tried to sneak cigarettes in 5th grade andnearly choked ourselves. I can look out thewindow and see the big quince tree Matt and the guys climbed up to crash my birthday slumber party two years ago. This is my bed, my chair, my dresser.

But right now everything looks strange to me, as if I don't below hem It's me that's out of place. And the worst thing is that I feel there's somewhere I do beIong, but I just can't find it.

I wastoo tired yesterday to go to Orientation.

Meredith picked up schedule for me, but I didn't feel like talking to her on the Phone. Aunt Judith told everyone who called that I had jet lag and was sleeping, but she watched me at dinner with a funny look on her face.

I've got to see the crowd today, though. We're supposed to meet in the parking lot before school. Is that why I'm scared? Am I ftightened of them?

Elena Gilbert stopped writing. She stared at the last line she had written and then shook her head, pen hovering over the small book with the blue velvet cover. Then, with a sudden gesture, she lifted her head and threw pen and book at the big bay window, where they bounced off harmlessly and landed on the upholsteredwindow seat.

It was all so completely ridiculous.

Since when had she, Elena Gilbert, been scared of meeting people? Since when had she been scared of anything? She stood up and angrily thrust her arms into a red silk kimono. She didn't even glance at the elaborate Victorian mirror above the cherrywood dresser; she knew what she'd see. Elena Gilbert, cool and blond and slender, the fashion trendsetter, the high school senior, the girl every bay wanted and every girl wanted to be. Who just now had an unaccustomed scowl on her face and a pinch to her mouth.

A hot bath and some coffee and I'll calm down, she thought. The morning ritual of washing and dressing was soothing, and she dawdled over it, sorting through her new outfits from Paris. She finally chose a pale rose top and white linen shorts combo that made her look like a raspberry sundae. Good enough to eat, she thought, and the mirror showed a girl with a secret smile. Her earlier fears had melted away, forgotten.

"Elena! Where are you? You're going to be late for school!" The voice drifted faintly up from below.

Elena ran the brush one more time through silky hair and pulled it back with a deep rose ribbon. Then she grabbed her backpack and went down the stairs.

In the kitchen, four-year-old Margaret was eating cereal at the kitchen table, and Aunt Judith was burning something on the stove. Aunt Judith was the sort of woman who always looked vaguely flustered; she had a thin, mild face and light flyaway hair pushed back untidily. Elena landed a peck on her cheek.

"Good morning, everybody. Sorry I don't have time for breakfast."

"But, Elena, you can't just go off without eating. You need your protein."

"I'll get a doughnut before school," said Elena briskly. She dropped a kiss on Margaret's tow head and turned to go.

"But, Elena — "

"And I'll probably go home with Bonnie or Meredith after school, so don't wait dinner. Bye!"

"Elena — "

Elena was already at the front door. She closed it behind her, cutting off Aunt Judith's distant protests, and st,epped out onto the front porch.

And stopped.

All, the, bad feelings of themorning rushed over her again. The anxiety, the fear. And the certainty that something terrible Was about to happen.

Maple Street was deserted. The tall Victorian houses looked strange and silent, as if they mightnight all be emptyinside, like the houses on an abandoned movie set. They lookeda's if they were empty of people, but full of strange watching in things.

I love the show The Vampire Diaries. I am a vapire junkie and before the show came out I read these books. The characters are very under developed. Elena is pretty much a beyotch and is selfish and self centered. She is angry and cant control herself because a boy doesnt look at her. It is quite narcisistic. Stefan and Damon are great characters but you never really get your full grasp of them and are left wanting moe. There is no real love triangle. Elena always loves Stefan and never really chooses Damon. There is no real substance to the books. The tv show is amazing. the characters are relatable and have real backround and have room to grow. Stefan is played amazignly by Paul Wesley and you really gt his sense of hurt and can see and feel the pain and suffering he has gone through in his eyes. Elena is very different from the books and actually cares about people other than herself. Damon is witty and sexy and although he does have that bad boy streak you ca actually see that he also has feelings and a is not a souless pit with no heart.

I am a college student and spend an enormous amount of time reading textbooks. Frequently I require an escape from reality, and this book did the trick. I love the fast paced nature of Teen Fiction, and this book was terrific! It is passionate, and gripping; full of excitement and a wonderfully easy read. I love the show and decided to read the books that made it possible. The book shares very little of the story line from the show, and that made it far more interesting. I was surprised to find that it had been written a while back. I envisioned the events on the landscape of today until I was hit with the realization that the characters were not jumping for their cell phones at every juncture, which made me look back to the publication date. The absence of instant contact via cell phones made the story more exciting and once I realized when the book had been written I stepped back into that time and stopped trying to rely on a cell phone for the plot, which was rather refreshing. All in all this is an awesome fast read that provides a well constructed escape from everyday life where you can get tangled up in the drama and chaos of well drawn characters who don't fit into the logic of our lives.

The only reason I keep reading these insufferable books is because I HAVE to know how they end. Even though there is a blossoming relationship I adore in the books (much later in the series)I would pick the show over the books anytime! Don't make the mistake I did and read the books. Ever!

Vampire diaries is the best series ive ever read, i think its even better than the twilight series. Damon is the bad boy, stephan is the sensitive good guy, and Elena is the girl who will never have a normal life because if stephan and damon. I love vampire books and i have read many but the vampire diaries was beyond the best of them. This book has twists that youll never expect and u will fall in love with the characters. Elean has two vampires falling in love with her and she must choose. Damon or stephan, who will she pick? To find out you must read the book. With elena fighting beside steaphen and damon they will face danger and their friends will help save them. When you read this book you will find your self dreaming about being amazing elana. While reading You will feel as if you are in the book fighting with stephan and damon. I sugest this book to everybody. The plot will make you want to read more. The romance is amazing and you could find your self crying. You will fall in love with the characters, the twists and plots, and you will fall im love with the book. Experience the best book you will ever read. READ THE VAMPIRE DIARIES!!!!!!!!

First, this book sucks. Second, im pretty sure the vampiare diaries came before twilight. And even the author of twilight didnt come up with idea of vampires anywy. So everyone copies somebody. Now about the vampiare diaries. They hardly spoke to eachother and then, next thing you know, he's bringing her to his house and they're kissing. She doesnt know hell about him and they barely spoke to eachother! What the?

I agree with people when they say that the show is better than the books. I watched the first few seasons of the show on Netflix and loved it. I was really excited to read the books, as I thought that the books would be just as amazing. I was greatly disappointed by the outcome of the books. I read the first three in hope that they would get better. During the third, I gave up hoping. The books are awful, the show is amazing. I agree with the person who mentioned the character of Damon. I definitely like the character the show gives him, and not the character that the books gave him. I am grateful for the books being around, as they set the foundation for an amazing television show, but I think TV did a much better job with the characters than the books did. I will never recommend this book to others, nor any of the vampire diaries books. The show I would recommend for sure, but definitely not the books.

In a society where sex is out front and romance and innocent first love is thrown into a corner this book is a refreshing tale. Combining the vampire lore we all know (& I personally love) with a romance between a high school girl and a dark, mysterious stranger. Throw in the brother and you have an enjoyable little triangle that leaves you turning pages and running to the bookstore for the next book is to see who will get the girl. It's romance is sweet, it's rivalry is bitter and the twists will keep you riveted. The first time I read this series I had to wait to read the last 2 books, I suggest getting all 4 and sitting down on lazy weekend and enjoy.

Read book 1 & decided to give book 2 a chance. Big mistake. Elena is a shallow, selfish girl and the rest of the characters are as flat as the page they are printed on. I'm a huge vampire fan, but I dont think I'll bother with book 3.

When I started reading this book I got addicted to reading and could hardly take my eyes away from the page. I woud get in trouble for hiding my nook under the table and reading at dinner. This book is fantastic. I recomend it to people who like paranormal romances twiste with bone chilling suspense.

You should really think about punctuation. Not only was your post had to read but it was annoying trying to sort through your opinions. And for the people who do, like me, think the Twilight series is better, you shouldn't be telling them to suck it. You need to go back to school and maybe learn some ethics.

i highly recommend this book.It is a beautiful love story and has plenty of intrigue and excitement. This series is geared more toward teens, but women of all ages would love it. I have been into vampires for years. Not the evil gory ones! I am 57 years old and still love them
