The longer she stays in town, the stranger things become, as Calla starts to experience unusual and unsettling events that lead her to wonder whether she has inherited her grandmother’s unique gift. Is it this gift that is making her suspect that her mother’s death was more than an accident, or is it just an overactive imagination? Staying in Lily Dale is the only way to uncover the truth. Publishers Weekly

Staub (the College Life 101 series) returns to the scene of her bestselling adult thriller In the Blink of an Eyefor the slick opener of the Lily Dale series. Readers meet Calla the summer before her senior year of high school as she attends her mother's funeral, devastated by her mother's accidental death. While her father looks for a rental in California, where he has earned a sabbatical, Calla opts to stay with a grandmother she barely knows in small (and real) Lily Dale, N.Y. (also the site of this summer's The Secret Life of Sparrow Delaney, reviewed 7/30). Upon arrival, she discovers that the town is a Victorian throwback-a spiritualist community populated by mediums, among them her grandmother Odelia. As Calla slowly warms up to offbeat Odelia and recovers from her dismay at the quaintness of Lily Dale (no e-mail and no cell-phone reception), figures invisible to others begin appearing to her, and a recurring nightmare afflicts her as well. Could she, too, share her grandmother's powers? Calla is doubting but open-minded, and her BFF Lisa, who comes to visit near the end, provides a vivid foil with her open disdain for the town. The sympathetic protagonist and the trendy paranormal premise make up for the loose development of the plot, which is slowed by several predictable story lines involving romantic rivals. When the ending wraps up one mystery only to intensify another, readers will be impatient for the next installment. Ages 12-up. (Sept.)

Gr 8-10 After her mom falls down the stairs and dies, Calla spends the summer with her maternal grandmother. Odelia lives in New York state in a place called Lily Dale, where spiritualists gather to give séances and readings. After several eerie experiences, Calla realizes reluctantly that she has inherited her grandmother's gift of seeing and communicating with the dead. The plot gathers momentum slowly as Calla meets other teens and tries to find explanations for the odd things that are happening to her, and it's only at the very end of the book that she realizes that a spirit has been trying to tell her something shocking about her mother's death. Nothing is resolved, so readers must wait for the sequel to find out what happens. The story is light and tingly enough to hold nondemanding readers' attention, but ultimately it feels incomplete and therefore somewhat frustrating.-Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

    Great Book

This unforgettable story begins, maintains, and ends strongly. It always has me holding my breathe, and waiting to see what is next. This is my first book I have read by Wendy Staub, but I cannot wait to read more.

Reviewed by Carrie Spellman for TeensReadToo.com

Calla Delaney was sure that when her boyfriend, Kevin, who also happens to be her best friend's brother, dumped her three months ago, it was the worst thing that could ever happen to her. She had never been so wrong. Standing at the edge of her mother's grave proves that. Her mother, who was way too young to die, especially in some crazy freak accident, before Calla even had time to talk to her about everything that you're supposed to get to talk to your mom about.

Before she has much time to process everything, Calla's dad sends her off to spend the summer with her weird grandmother, who she barely knows. It was that or live in an already overcrowded house with her aunt, uncle, and cousins. Or live with Lisa's family and risk running into Kevin on a regular basis. No thank you. Crazy Grandma it is.

Grandma Odelia lives in a very small town in western New York, in the middle of nowhere. Literally. Lily Dale gets no cell phone reception, and Odelia doesn't own a computer. Calla has no idea how she's supposed to get through all of this. Especially once she finds out what really goes on in Lily Dale, and why her Grandma always seemed so weird. When it starts to seem like Calla herself may have a place in this town, as well as in a family mystery, well... There's only one thing she's sure of -- nothing will ever be the same again.

If you like anything about the supernatural, ghosts, psychics, whatever, you will love this book! It's very well-written, and very absorbing! Calla is a perfect disbeliever, even with "reality" staring her in the face, and Odelia is just plain fun! This story has mystery, danger, romance, and so much more. You won't be sorry you read this one. It may even prompt a cool vacation, since Lily Dale is apparently a real place! I just hope I'm not wrong in assuming that there are many more books about Calla and Lily Dale on their way.

The story of mystery and suspense- A must read!

Lily Dale: Awakening is one of the most suspenseful stories I have ever read. The book is about a girl named Calla Delaney who had just broken up with her boyfriend. Although she thought it was the end of the world, it wasn¿t. There were just more unfortunate events to come such as losing her mom to a freak accident, or so she believes. While her dad, Jeff, leaves Florida in search of a job, she goes to Lily Dale, New York, to visit her Grandmother Odelia whom she has not seen for many years. Little does Calla know what she was in for. Lily Dale is a little town full of physics and mediums which Calla had no idea about. It¿s already bad enough that she has to live with her crazy grandmother for a whole summer or possibly even longer. Strange events occur leading Calla to doubts that she had never had before or at least hadn¿t ever thought about or thought it was even possible. Now she has to uncover the past and learn some things that seem as if it could be impossible to have happened.

Before figuring out the main parts of Calla¿s story and the mystery behind everything, you need to read the whole series. The books may get a bit boring, but I promise you that once you read all the books, it will be worth it. Calla finds out something major in the last book that her gift leads her to find out. I¿d say that one of the main themes of the story Is to be thankful for what you have because you don¿t know when you lose it.

Before finding the book, I knew that I wanted a book that had supernatural inferences and suspense a long with some mystery. Judging by the cover, it didn¿t seem too interesting. After reading the short summary on the back of the book, I knew immediately that it was a must read. Overall, the book was very pleasing. I am the type of person that cannot keep reading if a book is terrible, but honestly I couldn¿t keep from reading. Lily Dale: Awakening was the exact type of book I was looking for. It had just enough suspense to keep you from putting the book down. I¿m not quite sure if it was intended to have any mystery, but it did and I really enjoyed that. The mysteries just made the book even better. There were only a few times that I got a little bored and felt as if the author didn¿t know how to end what was occurring at the time. Other than that, it was excellent.

I would highly recommend anyone who loves supernatural and suspenseful books. If you enjoy this book, make sure you read the rest of the series because you will love it even more. I promise you won¿t be disappointed once you read it.

This book was excellent and I give it a total of 5 stars. You really feel for Calla throughout the stories, especially with some of the things that happen to her. I know I would hate to be Calla, but it¿s cool to see her be brave throughout the book.

    Outstanding & Well written Book

This was one of the best books ever! I totally recommend that you buy it and read it. It was xtremely suspenseful, and hard to put down. It is a thrilling, and kind of like a mystery book. There were many twists and turns. This is a kind of book that you could finish reading today, but then four days later, you would have an urge to read it over from cover to cover (even though you still remember every part of it).

Overall, it was a spactacular story!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Okay read...

I enjoy supernatural themes in novels and I am a BIG fan of WCS's adult mystery novels, so I thought I'd give this series a try. It is definitely geared towards young adults, but not in the more univeral way that the Twilight series is. Overall it was a light, easy read and I will most likely check out the additional novels in the series.

Lily Dale: Awakening by Wendy Corsi Staub

Two weeks after Calla's mother dies in an accident, she is spending the summer with her grandmother whom she barely knows. She lives in the town called Lily Dale.

Calla finds out that the town is filled with psychics, including her grandmother. Everything just keeps growing stranger the longer Calla stays there. She starts wondering if she herself has inherited the unique gift. If she stays in Lily Dale she would be able to uncover her family secrets, but will she be able to handle the truth? Does Calla really know who her mother truly is?

This book was difficult to put down and it was a page turning. When I got through it I was looking forward to reading the next book.

    Good story...terible ending

How can you stop a book in the middle of a story? Especially a book this short. Should be called a short story or novella rather tthan sold as a novel with less than 200 pages. Even tho i like the subject matter a lot...wont be reading more of this author because now i know she just gets to the heart of it and ends instead of wraping up the story beefore writing another too short...stop in the middle...very unsatisfactory tiny little novel. I want to hear more of this tale but wont pay to be disappointed like that again.
