In 2000, 3 Doors Down's debut The Better Life and its omnipresent single "Kryptonite" authoritatively established the Escatawpa, MS band as rock stars in the vein of fellow new arena rockers Creed. All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
In 2000, 3 Doors Down's debut The Better Life and its omnipresent single "Kryptonite" authoritatively established the Escatawpa, MS band as rock stars in the vein of fellow new arena rockers Creed. After extensive touring and over 6 million albums sold, it might have been difficult for the band to focus on their sophomore release. But vocalist Brad Arnold, guitarists Matt Roberts and Chris Henderson, bassist Todd Harrell, and new drummer Daniel Adair who took over to free Arnold from behind the kit retreated to a rented house in sleepy Escatawpa to jam on ideas and lyrics that had been formulated over long months on tour. What sophomore slump? Away from the Sun, released in November of 2002, immediately went Gold, and reached Platinum in early January 2003. It's a much more accomplished album than The Better Life, smoothing out most of the rough patches that slowed down the debut. Lead single "When I'm Gone" is a muscular blues-rocker that recalls Kenny Wayne Shepherd -- it's representative of the album's predominantly mid-tempo arrangements that focus on Arnold's contemplative lyrics. He doesn't proselytize like Creed's Scott Stapp, nor does he rely on obvious nu-metal clich├ęs like Saliva's Joey Scott. Instead, Arnold's lyrics lean more towards the first-person confessional style favored by Southern rock mainstays such as the Allman Brothers or Lynyrd Skynyrd. While Universal/Republic might lump them in with the chest-thumpers and active rock doomsayers, Away from the Sun makes it clear that 3 Doors Down are really more comfortable where the sky is always blue. That said, the band doesn't yet have the hooks to remain consistently interesting for an entire album. Besides the unstoppable melody of the title track, and "Ticket To Heaven," which shows some real songwriting depth in comparison to the band's debut, many of Away From The Sun's 11 tracks sound too similar. It's an accomplished, often rocking, and sometimes genuinely emotional set, but there just isn't enough variety to sustain it. On the plus side, 3 Doors Down and producer Rick Parashar Pearl Jam, Blind Melon didn't go overboard on the effects, as can often be the case with sophomore releases. Instead, a string section drifts in and out of a few tracks, with the ballad "Here Without You" benefiting particularly nicely. There's a good chance Away from the Sun is the transition record 3 Doors Down needed to make, in order to separate themselves from the glut of sound-alikes and establish their future as a viable, album-oriented Southern rock act.

    It Rocks!

This is an album of pure rock and roll... i truly could relate to it and it had to do with things going on in my life (which is important to me when i listen to music)... the song Changes rocks and the bonus track (which is actually titled "This Time") is also one of my favs. This is a top-notch album, like all of their others... i can't wait for another and hope they continue making music for a long time...

    LOVE IT!

This CD is great. I got it from a friend, and ever since I first picked it up, I've had a hard time putting it down. I especially love the songs, "Here Without You", "Changes", and "Ticket to Heaven"! This is a must-buy!

Rock Album I Could Relate To

I heard When I'm Gone and knew I had to own this album. So I bought it and gave a listen. One of the few rock albums outside of Linkin Park that I could really relate to. Running Out of Days and Changes describe my life so well it's almost like I wrote them.

    Blah!

I bought this CD because of the song "Here Wothout You", but I was sooo disappointed. The songs are all about the same thing and have no catchy melodies or interesting lyrics. I've listened to this CD once and haven't picked it up since. Don't waste your money!!!

    Average Corporate Rock

Sure, they're radio-friendly and better than a good share of their contemporaries, but that just can't mask the overwhelming mediocrity of this band. All the songs begin to sound the same, with the key offender being the formulated vocals. Make no mistake, this album was written to make money, not out of a desire to create art.

    Awesome CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 Doors Down is among the best bands ever, and their music never gets old. From the unstoppable force of Ticket to Heaven and Changes, to the lighter Away From the Sun and Here Without You, their music gripps the listener and takes them on a musical thrill ride. Anyone that enjoys good music that never gets boring absolutely has to buy this CD!

    Excellent lyrics

I enjoy most all music genres. I saw a clip as I was watching a Nascar race several weeks ago where Dale Jr. and Tony were in this music video. They did not even play the entire video but it sounded great, so I went and bought it. Well, I was glad I did. Every song is fantastic. They sound a little like Creed but definately have a sound of thier own. I hope they continue the good music they put out on this CD.

    CD Everybody Should Own

3 Doors Down had done it again. This CD is every bit as good as the first one if not better. The music and lyrics to the songs have so much feeling to them. "When I'm Gone" has definately been a popular song this year. This is a CD you could listen to forever.

    Great Album!

Every bit as good as "The Better Life." Does not contain any songs that should have been left off of the album. I enjoy listening to the entire album repeatedly.

Since I bought this CD about 2 weeks ago it has been playing continuously in my car. I can't stop! All of these tunes are great, catchy lyrics (Changes, Away from the Sun), and great music. Can't wait to see them in concert next month! Buy IT!

U don't wanna miss this album

This is music. Thanx too the pre-launch of this album on the net, I've been able to enjoy it for a month now- and it still sounds just as good. As soon as it's available, I'm buying it- just so you know that getting it for free doesn't mean i don't wanna by the real thing!
