Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Karen Leggett
For children or teens who would much rather be careening around a half-pipe on anything with wheels than reading, this title and others in the action-packed "Big Air" series will be books of choice. The text is short and simple almost to an extreme. A little more history of the sport, the various levels of competition, a discussion of safety equipment like helmets and knee pads would have been valuable. There are a few more facts in this Motocross volume about famous competitors and the tricks they created. The photos are outstanding and dramatic, highlighting not only the skill and danger involved in stunts but also the fact that not just boys and teens are competitors, but adults and girls as well. Each chapter covers a different stunt on small motorcyles, with a double-spread of descriptions and jaw-dropping images—Beyond Imagination, Hart Attack Backflip, and Electric Doom. Each volume includes a short glossary, resources and a simple index. Despite the lack of depth, the "Big Air" series is a good high interest/low level choice for the library or classroom. The other titles in the series cover skateboarding, BMX, and snowboarding. Reviewer: Karen Leggett
