Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The yo-yo is the second oldest toy in the world, according to the authors. A history of the yo-yo and how it evolved over the centuries is presented in an interesting manner. Maintenance hints, information on the yo-yo museum in Chico, California and current reigning champions are included. The main emphasis is on learning the different tricks of the yo-yo in beginner, advanced and expert categories. All tricks are presented with color photos of the stages involved in the action. Directions are clear and easy to follow, and the finesse required to use this small toy is apparent. It includes photographs of people from 7 years old to over 50 performing the tricks┬żevidence that there is something for everyone with the yo-yo. Put one of these books in with a new yo-yo for that special someone's next gift. Maybe they'll be an international champion someday, or just have a fascinating new hobby that fits in their pocket. 2000, Sterling Publishing,
From The Critics
Filled with color photographs on glossy, heavy pages, this can be the ideal companion for kids wanting to improve their yo-yo skills. The opening chapter has interesting information on yo-yo personalities and championships. 2000, Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., $9.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up-Thirty-five feats of increasing difficulty are illustrated in sharp, step-by-step photographs. Fixed axle and transaxle yo-yos are introduced, as are Imperial, butterfly, modern/modified, and novelty designs. Basic maintenance and string replacement are explained, and a few pages of yo-yo science and history are included. A few masters are mentioned. A more complete listing of related organizations can be found in John Ten Eyck's The Yo-Yo Book (Workman, 1998), but for instruction and range of tricks, this is an excellent choice that illustrates the joys of mastering the yo-yo.-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

My 12 year old loved it!

My 12 year old got the YO Yo book for Christmas. He has been working on the tricks almost every day. I like it because he is so busy learning the tricks, he forgets about his video games and that he is READING. Which is hard to get him to do with all the video games. I think this is something that everyone in the family would enjoy.

    Poorly Made

The string did not grip, and then the whole yo-yo just fell apart in our hands... all in the 1st day that my 6 year old got it for Christmas!!

    Excellent Choice!

There are a lot of Yo-Yo trick books on the market, but this one stands apart from the rest. The chapters on History, Types of Yo-Yos and Maintenance are great! The illustrations are great - tricks are explained using color photos. <p> The history section has information I've not seen anywhere else, and the maintenance section covers fixed axle yo-yos as well as transaxle yo-yos. I found the Science chapter very informative and entertaining. The zoetrope of 'Time Warp' was a nice touch too. <p> I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in learning to yo-yo. Tricks go from the very basic one handed tricks to advanced two handed tricks. Tricks are explained in easy language and are graded according to difficulty (very helpful for the beginner looking to learn some new tricks).

    Fun

Got this for my little cousin, he liked it. It's a good gift for a kid under 10. His little sister was interested in it too and it comes with 2 yo-yo's so he shared.

Tricks are good; yoyo is not.

It would have been best to buy the book of yoyo tricks. It's informative, and lots of fun. But my kids were frustrated by the yoyos, which had flimsy, sticky string and did not work well. I had to buy them better yoyos on the side.
In order to make it a kit, a box with plastic inserts houses the book and yoyos. It's a lot of packaging, and was discarded/recycled as soon as the kids opened the box.
