I liked the book overall, for the most part. However, about a third of the way through it I began to dislike Izzy something fierce. I am not sure she ever won me back over.
Also, and thos is going to seem harsher than intended...
This book was a Kristen Ashley Rock Chicks rip off if ever there was such a thing. From the hot guy private detective/security group, to the annoyong use of curse words every other word-and I am no prude, to the down right pathetic and obvious attempt to leave out first person pronouns when the men speak- at one point Axel sounds like a toddler caveman, to the possessive growling. It just smacks of Kristen Ashley.
Only, Kristen Ashley does it better. Much better.
The book could have been great if the author had been more original and made Izzy less of a... um, unlikable female, and Axel less of a moron.

I know domestic violence exists. Not looking for repeated descriptions of broken bones and concussions when I want to read a romance. Every possible piece of contrived drama is thrown in to this book and it only manages to make me glad to get to the end of it.

I do not usually write reviews unless something really stands out to me. Typically, I am able to overlook some of the things that others may complain about with books like this. However, there were so many things that went wrong in this story, I couldn't not write a review.
First, technically I found many instances where sentences were incomplete. It often reminded me of text messages where someone says something and eliminates the "I" at the beginning because it's understood. Well, that may be true, but in a novel the sentence should be complete.
Secondly, I found some of the content unreastic and/or hard to believe. I did not think the relationship between Izzy & Greg was realistic. Greg seemed too good to be true. The author tried to drill into the reader that their bond was more sister/brother more than once and it seemed very forced. I didn't feel their bond, it was more like I was being told about this connection without feeling it. Also, without giving too much away, I want to know why Dee would stay at the townhouse after what happened to Izzy. Of course, something would happen. This content was way too predictable. Another problem I have had is that I really still don't understand why after 2 years the ex husband would start showing up. There is some explanation about his dad and money, but I still think I missed something because I am confused.
Lastly, I did not, in any stretch of the imagination, feel an appropriate build up to the reconciliation. It seemed like with the flip of one page, they went from avoiding each other to being in being hot & heavy up against the wall. I remember literally thinking, where did that come from. I thought they were not really talking.
Overall, I was extremely disappointed and gave 2 stars simply because I like to read about women overcoming such obstacles. But I found I could not wait to finish it to see if it was worth it. In the end, it is not worth it.

The story was actually kind of interesting but the characters were lame. To much cusing and with every other word in the men's dialogue being a cus word, just making them seem like they were trying to hard to make them seem like bad asses.

This is a book that SCREAMS to be read!! Alpha man, broken heroine, great supporting characters. Very well written for this to be the debut book to a series that is sure to have you waiting very impatiently for the next one!!! I would have to say that this is the best book I've read this year and I've read a lot so far!!! I fell in love with Axel and Izzy from the beginning! If you love a ex-military man that is super alpha, loves deep and burns the sheets up with the love of his life then here you go! :)

I am a fan of Alpha males and Axel Reid definitely falls on to that list. Hot marine-check, troubled past-check, dirty mouth-check. He did have some moments when he sounded a little too "caveman" for me so I chopped him down from a 4 to a 3 star, but overall I would lean more toward 4 star because he was still a good character and I enjoyed seeing him and Izzy "re-connect".
Izzy was a little on the cry baby side and got hurt a lot even though she had like 5 huge bodyguard brothers looking out for her, but she did redeem herself and show she can take care of herself after all.
The book was a little slow for me until Axel showed up, but it was a great intro in to this series. I loved all of the secondary characters. Dee was a great BFF and I loved Greg, so I am happy to see Cage is his story, the next in the series. Even Sway was a great addition to the book making for a well rounded read and leaving me wanting more of the remaining Corp. Security boys.

Loved this book. Great story line and characters. Love that the family is not blood but close friends. Hot sexy read. Can't wait to see more from this series!

I don't normally leave negative reviews, but for a "best seller" this was kind of a rip-off.
Pros: Izzy's reactions and behavior were fairly realistic for a f'd-up lady. The drama was decent and the side characters were pretty engaging.
Cons: Sway's character was ridiculously sterotypical. Almost all of the dialog was stupid and juvenile... and speaking of "f'd-up", I cuss like a sailor, but these characters talked like 12 year olds, calling each other names and dropping the f-bomb every other word.
No the worst I've ever read, but certainly not the best. If this is a bestseller, it was due to clever marketing, not solid content.

Axel was an awesome book and a great. character. Izzy was a sweetheart that fate had handed a really crappie life to. After reuniting
and a few rough patches Axel and Izzy are completely in love with each other and fighting to stay together.
I also enjoyed the deleted scenes added to the end of the book.

I think I have found a new series to read. While I feel the cover may be to much for me... it proabably isn't for most :) The only thing I did not like about this book was the swearing, be forewarned if you don't like a lot of F bombs do not read this book. I feel like it was maybe over used a little bit. I get it they are big strong alpha men but even the women were swearing like sailors.
On the positive side I stayed up late 2 nights in a row to read this! I was in love in the first chapter. You feel the couple's struggles, and their feelings. The ups the downs had me on a emotional roller coaster. I feel that's the best kind of book, the one you don't want to put down, it has you feeling what the characters are feeling.
Will continue reading this series!!

WOW! Words really cannot describe the emotional gambit you run while reading Axel, and even afterwards. This book stayed with me for a very long time and I still go back to re-read the parts I highlighted. Harper Sloan does warn you that this is not suitable for younger audiences and she does mean it.
Isabelle West's life has been tough. She is finally in a place where she can enjoy it a little bit thanks to her friends Dee and Greg. However the one person from her past that she truly loved is back after she thought he was dead. She also now has to face the one thing from her past she feared the most and hoped would stay in her past
Axel never thought her would ever see Isabelle again after he left but due to fate he has finally found her again, but fate has a way of making life that much more difficult.
I instantly fell in love with Axel and Isabelle. They prove that life is hard, but the things in life that really do mean the most are the things worth fighting for.
*** SMALL SPOLIER***
Yes there are parts that some may have issues with, but I don't think that any of it was overdone, and what Harper wrote works for the story. It never went past my comfort zone and I have a low tolerance for abuse in books.

Good story and enjoyed reading. I have purchased the other books also. Good character development but very poor grammer and lots of improper spelling. I have to say that I find that really annoying. I don't understand why an author would allow a book to be released in such a state. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
