All Music Guide - Cub Koda
Jimi Hendrix's second album followed up his groundbreaking debut effort with a solid collection of great tunes and great interactive playing between himself, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and the recording studio itself. Wisely retaining manager Chas Chandler to produce the album and Eddie Kramer as engineer, Hendrix stretched further musically than the first album, but even more so as a songwriter. He was still quite capable of coming up with spacy rockers like "You Got Me Floating," "Up from the Skies," and "Little Miss Lover," radio-ready to follow on the commercial heels of "Foxey Lady" and "Purple Haze." But the beautiful, wistful ballads "Little Wing," "Castles Made of ...

But the beautiful, wistful ballads "Little Wing," "Castles Made of Sand," "One Rainy Wish," and the title track set closer show remarkable growth and depth as a tunesmith, harnessing Curtis Mayfield soul guitar to Dylanesque lyrical imagery and Fuzz Face hyperactivity to produce yet another side to his grand psychedelic musical vision. These are tempered with Jimi's most avant-garde tracks yet, "EXP" and the proto-fusion jazz blowout of "If 6 Was 9."

Towering in shinny metallic purple armour

It is true of the misfortune of the premature delivery of Jimi Hendrix into the nether world of the intergallactic cosmos. For had he lived surely the world might have benefited by his days. And so it is that the Beastlord Slavedragon, he planeth his posistion firmly beyond the grave in so far as much to prevent the happenstance which befell our young Master Hendrix.

Now Queen Jealousy Envy who waitith behind his ghost hath firey green diamonds which gaze efferrvescently at the grassy ground. The life giving waters which are blue and taken for granted, yet lo doth they quietly understand that once long ago happy turquoise armies lay opposite and ready but wonder and bemuse themselves of the matter of the meaning of the fight which the are about to engage and embark upon. Nay are they not all of them as bold as love? What say ye gentlemen? Ask the Axis. apparently he is a rather well informed minsiter of information.

The Beastlord Slavedragon lo doth he smileth at the lesson prospectus laid bare before us here by the young fallen squire Master J. Hendrix

    The second treasure

This is Jimi's second great album. It must be remembered that Jimi was a very young man and in this second album he began to reach for more than just 'hits'. He wanted to transcend the instruments to something higher. He never really reached the goal he was after, but his attempts are endlessly fascinating.

    Hendrix's Rules!

The band's sophomore release features great songwriting tunes like the early hard rock number "Spanish Castle Magic", the soulful ballads "Little Wing"/"One Rainy Wish", early funk-rock "You Got Me Floatin"/"Little Miss Lover", some avant-garde "EXP"/"If Six Was Nine", some jazz "Up From The Skies", psychedelic pop "She's So Fine" and check out the oriental inspired intro in "Castles Made Of Sand"; without a doubt one of Jimi's best songs ever!

    what an album!!!

this is a great, great, great album. even if you're not a hendrix fan, you still should definitely listen to this cd. "Little Wing" and "Castles made of Sand" are some awesome songs. Oh, and go for a few other hendrix albums.

    Hail Hendrix!

The only thing this album may lack is a youthful appearence by todays standards. This is one of the greatest Hendrix albums. Album production has not evolved much since Hendrix's era,(Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, excluded) and Bold As Love speaks this in volumes. This album shows that Hendrix was not all about Purple Haze. He shows more substance than people expected from him. Mellow is the key word for this masterpiece of 60's music. Great Song writing, from Hendrix. Had he lived he would have the respect that Quincy Jones now has.
