Overview

"I love Keven McQueen's work, and once again, he delivers. . . . In the historical true crime genre, [he] is king. . . . As an author and critic in this genre, I adore his stories."
-Laura James, crime historian and author, The Love Pirate and the Bandit's Son: Murder, Sin, and Scandal in the Shadow of Jesse James

"The stories are alternately chilling, fascinating, and absurd and display the author's abilities as a historian, researcher, storyteller, and humorist."
-Cindi Sullivan, WAVE 3 TV, Louisville, Kentucky

This true crime collection chronicles several murders that occurred throughout the South between the 1880s and the early 1930s. While some received national attention, others remain buried in obscurity. Keven McQueen digs deep into his research for each fatal case, bringing new revelations to the surface rather than repeating previously published facts. From the "Servant Girl Annihilator" in Texas and "Henry Delaney's Half-Hour Marriage" in Kentucky to "Christmas for the Sims Gang" in Alabama, chapters cover more than a dozen bone-chilling cases. With a dark sense of humor, the author reveals a wicked side of a region synonymous with sweet tea and scented vines of wisteria.

Keven McQueen teaches composition and world literature at Eastern Kentucky University. He is the author of more than ten books spanning such genres as true crime and Southern history. In addition to doing archival work at Berea College Library, he once served as a tour guide at White Hall, the mansion of Cassius M. Clay, and as a night watchman at a funeral home. McQueen earned his BA from Berea College and an MA in English from Eastern Kentucky University. He lives in Berea, Kentucky.
