Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Generally known as a violent, bloodthirsty civilization, the Aztecs conquered many tribes in lands now known as Mexico. Tributes, including human sacrifices, were paid that brought great wealth to the noble families while the poor lived a hard life. So great was the tyranny that even their pastimes had to fit in with the will of the gods. While this detailed offering does not hesitate to mention the horrific aspects of Aztec life, it presents other interesting facts, such as the system of recording symbols for numbers and reproductions of original codex drawings of children being educated. Kids will also learn about the lives of the rich and poor, their pastimes and fashions, love and marriage, religion and more. It falls a little short on the interesting crafts and art that is such a strong part of Aztec tradition. The text is busy but well labeled, with many meaningful photos of artifacts and reproductions of 16th century life. This is a useful resource for reports and an impetus for further research. A pronunciation guide and index are included. Several web sites are listed for further study but no book references. Part of the "Ticktock Early Civilizations" series. 2000, Barron's, . Ages 8 to 12. KLIATT
These new entries in an attractive series for upper elementary and middle school students examine daily life in various early civilizations. Their strength lies in the many color photos and illustrations that show aspects of each civilization, ranging from art and architecture to fashion, health and medicine, life for the rich and for the poor, religion, love and marriage, crime and punishment, food and drink, pastimes, and more. Topics are presented as double-page spreads, with text consisting of a paragraph and detailed captions for the many illustrations. So these books are of more interest as a browsing experience than as research tools, and they tend to oversimplify their subjects. They do give a visual sense of the richness and variety inherent in these cultures, however, and may serve to spark interest in further investigation. (Early Civilizations).
