Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Treadway M.Ed
The "Myths of the World" series includes stories about ancient civilizations with maps, artifacts, language notes, and artistic expressions. A "Cast of Characters" prior to each one lists important historical figures with brief descriptions and a pronunciation guide. Part One lays the necessary context for several Aztec myths while Part Two contains several different stories. Cultural aspects such as geography, society, government, religion, belief systems and political climate are discussed in Part One. Therefore, each myth incorporates a record of their lives. The author skillfully provides specific resources that document extensive research involved in chronicling ancient peoples. Traditional stories, whether they are myth or legend, tell about a significant way of life and related beliefs. Retelling them for new audiences provide a common thread down through the ages and can be for pure enjoyment even today. Myths in particular furnish explanations concerning deeper, complex areas of mystery and concern. Aztecs believed in gods and goddesses (always primary characters), magic, spirits, and monsters. Thus, "The Five Suns" tells the story of the origins of the world whereas "Quetzalcoatl Visits the Underworld" involves the origins of humanity. Corn was the most important staple along with an alcoholic beverage pulque which are highlighted in "Gifts from the Gods." Where did light and darkness come from? Read "The Birth of Huitzilopochtli" to find out. There are numerous versions of where the Aztec people came from in "The Great Migration." Lastly, "Tales of the Conquest" relates to the end of the world. Text boxes and captions emphasize additional details about the Aztecs. Also, excellent features help expand one's scope and understanding: a Glossary, Aztec Writing and Texts (an annotated source list for each myth), To Find Out More, Web Sites, Selected Bibliography, Notes on Quotations and an Index. The series is geared for older elementary and middle school children without being just dry, boring facts. Indeed, storytelling brings new life to the study of ancient civilizations as every generation can then explore a different time and place in "Myths of the World." Reviewer: Susan Treadway, M.Ed
