B-17 Combat Missions by Martin Bowman and Maj Gen Lewis Lyle

This was a wonderful if somewhat sobering look at the men who flew the B-17s on the daylight raids into Nazi held Europe. The book had a unique ordering. It started with a general history and perceptions of the B-17 Flying Fortress. After this generalization, the authors took a serious look each of the positions in the B-17s, using the testimony of men who served at each of these positions. The positions were the Pilots, the Bombardier, the Navigator, the Upper Ball Turret, the Lower Ball Turret, the Waist Gunners, and the Tail Gunners. The testimony of each of the men who served in these positions was quite sobering and destroyed any romantic ideas associated with thos men who flew in the B-17s in combat.

I have to admit that I did have certain romantic ideas about the airplane since I am a retired Boeing engineer. In fact, it was through reading ancient Aviation Weekly magazines about the durability of the Boeing B-17s that I decided that Boeing was where I wanted to work.

At the conclusion of the book, all I can say is, "I am glad that I did not have to fly on those missions that ultimately weakened the Nazi's ability to wage war.

    Knowledge intense and readable!

A very fascinating read of tasks and responsibilities of crews of B17s. Helped me understand what my father, as a navigator, did and touched me emotionally as well.
