A Wonderful Reason to Learn to Read

As a Chinese child entering grade school in 1960, I could not speak nor read English. As I struggled to keep up with the class, this was a book I thoroughly enjoyed and fell in love with - so much so that I can look back with extreme fondness. A sweet book that enabled me to learn to love reading - English became my major in High School!

B IS FOR BETSY is the first in a series of children's "chap

B IS FOR BETSY is the first in a series of children's "chapter books" with stories of Betsy's adventures with attending school.  First published in 1939, it is more about the times of my mother as opposed to my granddaughter.  But actually, it seems to be a potentially educational and fun experience for use with my granddaughter as an example of how school used to be for her elderly relatives.

Betsy first fears the start of first grade, but soon enjoys all the many experiences and friends that starting school provides for her.  Her class grows frogs from tadpoles, created a circus for another class, and donated a Thanksgiving dinner to an elderly friend of the school.  Betsy finds a new best friend and gets a new puppy.

Short enough for a young child to keep interest, and the black and white pictures are great.  Think this will be a good series to help start my three little granddaughters on the road to happy reading adventures.

interesting look at life in 'olden days'

Carolyn Haywood '1898-1990' was a native of Philadelphia. One of America's most popular authors of children's books, she published her first book, 'B' Is for Betsy, in 1939, and wrote more than forty books altogether. Many of her own childhood experiences can be found in her novels. In this book, Betsy has turned six. It chronicles her first year in school and tells how school goes from being a large and frightening place, based on the scary tales of Old Ned, her grandfather's hired hand, from his childhood school days, to being something exciting and interesting. This book describes what schools were like in the 'olden days' and is an interesting look at life during that time. For example, just before Thanksgiving, Betsy's teacher tells how the Pilgrims gave thanks to God. Betsy is not an 'ipsy-pipsy perfect' little girl. She is naughty on occasion, but she suffers the consequences of her actions, is sorry, and learns to do better. I had never heard of this series. Haywood's stories about her irrepressible character Betsy, originally consisting of twelve books, have never been out of print, and now the first four Betsy books are back for a whole new generation of young readers. The other three are Back to School with Betsy, Betsy and Billy, and Betsy and the Boys.

    Betsy Books are wonderful

As a child, the Betsy books were one of my favorite series and I am now starting to share them with my daughter. She has enjoyed reading the first book and it was nice for us to read some of it together. I am excited they are being re-released this year and hope that many other moms will share these books with their daughters!
