Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sam the lamb has a terrible cold. And only a delightfully silly romp in the barnyard with his friends will help him get a much-needed sneeze out. One by one, Sam's friends try their own way of helping him, only to fail time and time again. In the end, everyone working together brings Sam what he so needs. The illustrations are expressive and light-hearted and balance the story from the first picture of Sam on the title page—obviously in need of a good "baa-choo"—to the last picture of relief when his friends say, "Bless you." Children will enjoy the predictability and progression of the story with its singsong rhythm. Also, the book contains enough simple words and repetition to become a favorite of beginning readers. It gives children the perfect opportunity to learn new words that are similar to words they already know, as on page 18 where Sam sniffed, snorted, snuffed, huffed, puffed, and stuffed. This is part of the "I Can Read" series. 2004, HarperCollins, Ages 4 to 8.
—Cathy Puett Miller
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
This poor sheep is all set to sneeze but he can only get as far as the "ahhh"—where it is the "choo"? His barnyard friends have plenty of suggestions—the hen tries tickling him with a feather, but this fails. Then pig has a great idea—how about some pepper? A nice try, but that also fails. The nanny goat and her kid figure a bit of dust will finally bring on the "choo." Well, watch out, because it is the sneeze of sneezes when Sam the sheep finally gets some relief. The amusing, rhyming story is accompanied by equally amusing illustrations to create an early reader that should make kids laugh. A Level 1 book in the "I Can Read Book" series, which is designed with simple sentences for eager new readers.
Kirkus Reviews
A sniffly sheep develops a tantalizing "Baa . . . ahhh . . . ," but the "choo" proves elusive in this rhymed barnyard caper. Wearing a garishly striped shirt and an expression of extreme misery, Sam the lamb seeks aid and finds it. But it takes the combination of a tickly feather from Gwen the hen, pepper from Sig the pig, and a cloud of dust kicked up by Franny Nannygoat to do the deed at last. Sam's mighty blast blows all of his helpers almost out of the picture, though not so far away that they can't all offer a secular "Bless you!" at the end. A juicy addition to such explosive classics as Ruth Brown's Big Sneeze (1985) and Patricia Thomas's "Stand Back," Said the Elephant, "I'm Going to Sneeze!" (1971). (Easy reader. 5-7)
