Editorial Reviews

Quill & Quire
Baa! is as enjoyable to read through in a sitting as it is useful as a reference for kids needing up-to-date background on a timely, exciting subject.
The Globe and Mail
Like other books in this series (Burp! and Hmm?), this one offers a barrage of information for the curious, presented in an eye-catching way.
From the Publisher
Nicolson has a knack for finding interesting details and sidelight that illustrate the main points without dry explication. Her explanations of scientific concepts are brief, but surprisingly clear. Though sometimes comical or downright goofy, Cowles’ paintings have a lively, informal air that helps make the subject of genetics more accessible to young people.

Nicolson does maintain a steady balance between breadth and depth in this primer on genetic mechanisms and issues. Sidebars offer instructions for very basic demonstrations of each topic. In addition, she expertly sets the stage for upcoming developments in the already-begun genetic revolution.

Children's Literature
This truly is an interesting book about genes, genetic codes, and cloning for upper elementary and middle school students. The author intersperses fascinating real life accounts such as when identical triplet brothers who were separated at birth find each other as adults, with clearly explained scientific information about DNA, gene mutations, and faulty genes. The crime detection section tells how scientists used DNA to identify and convict the Unabomber in 1998. The cartoon illustrations are humorous and yet they also elucidate the text. The controversy over genetic research is handled evenly, making this book a good choice for class discussions and school reports. All of this makes the book a recommended purchase for middle school and public libraries. 2001, Kids Can Press, $14.95. Ages 9 to 14. Reviewer: Wendy Pollock-Gilson<%ISBN%>1550748564
