Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This is a comprehensive guide to recognizing and treating medical problems that commonly affect children. A section on caring for sick children covers everything from taking their temperatures to keeping them busy when they are bedridden. ``Visual diagnosis guides'' present detailed drawings of parts of the body, designed to help a parent identify symptoms of ailments or illnesses. The bulk of Stoppard's book is devoted to a comprehensive alphabetical listing of complaints, which includes descriptions of the conditions and their causes, and recommended remedies. Tips for home and car safety and directions for administering first aid round out this extremely worthwhile volume. Its strong visuals and concise explanations and directions make it easier to use than many books on the subject. (March)
Library Journal
Dr. Stoppard has written a clear and thorough dictionary-style reference guide in straightforward, nonmedical language. Each entry in the alphabetical listing of common childhood complaints and illnesses contains a complete definition, advice on what to do, when to consult a physician, and what the physician is likely to do. Preceding the A to Z listing is an excellent guide to the anatomy of a child and tips for caring for a sick child. Also included is a very useful section on safety at home and on the road, plus a critical chapter on first aid including CPR techniques. This excellent, easy-to-use handbook is a fine complement to the more medically technical revised Encyclopedia of Baby and Child Care (Prentice Hall, 1981) by Dr. Lendon Smith. Highly recommended. One generation to the next.

My mother bought this book when I was child, and it came in handy for her. Well now that I have children of my own we still look to it. My daughter had a rash after having a fever, the rash was only on certian parts of her body. It was great we looked up Rashes in the index and then looked for what rash best described her symptoms. It let us know that it was contagious and was not serious but to watch my childs temp. I liked that it also showed pictures so I knew what they were exactly talking about. All in all the book has been useful to us.

Quick answers before you can reach the doctor

This is a handy book when your baby/child has a symptom and you don't know what to do, or can not reach the doctor right away. I recommend it to all new parents.

The Best Easy Reference on the Market

This book is a must for any mother. It gives you all the information you need to figure out what's wrong with your child & it's written in plain everyday language that anyone can understand. If your child has a rash and you're uncertain to what it is, you simply look up 'rash'. The 'rash' entry will then give you an overview of all rashes and give you the possible types that your child may have ie... chickenpox, german measles, scabies, poison ivy, etc...with a seperate listing for each one that includes a symptoms section to help you differentiate between the different types. It also lists what you should do first, if it'serious and the possible complications, if you should consult the doctor, what the doctor might do and what you can do. I have referred to it hundreds of times! I am a college graduate, licensed Physical Therapist Assistant who deals with medical issues daily and even with all of my medical knowledge, I would not do without this book. I give it as a baby shower present & am thanked for years to come.
