Children's Literature - Vicki FooteTwo cute baby pandas adorn the cover of this nonfiction text for beginning readers. Part of the "Nature's Baby Animals" series, this text describes some baby animals and how they have special ways to stay safe and live in the mountains. There is a large photograph of each animal in its environment along with another photo that shows the animal with its mother. A paragraph gives information about each creature. The animals included are the giant panda, the guanaco, the mountain lion, the mountain goat, the mountain gorilla, the rock hyrax, the peregrine falcon, and the snow leopard. Interesting and basic facts are given about each animal; for example, the panda cub is the size of a banana when it is born, and the guanacos have thick pads on the bottoms of their feet that help them walk on rocky mountains. Words in bold print are defined on a "Words to Know" page along with photos. A table of contents, bibliography, websites, and an index are included. Children will enjoy the photos, and the simple sentences help make the text easier to read for beginning readers. This text would also be suitable as a supplement to early science curriculum.
