Children's Literature - Chris Newsham
Part of the "Nature's Baby Animals" series, the colorful photographs of cute baby animals in this book will attract young readers and the easy-to-read text will teach them about the animals that live in the ocean. Each book in the series, which supports the National Science Education Standards for K-4 Life Science, focuses on a specific biome and highlights several animals and their habitats. An endangered species is featured in each title. The first page of text is a simple explanation of what the ocean is and presents the theme of the book, "Baby animals have special ways to stay safe and live in the ocean." The harp seal, bottlenose dolphin, sea turtle, hermit crab, clown fish and more are then each presented on a two-page spread. One page of each chapter is a full-page photograph of the animal with its name in bold type. The other page is four or five simple facts about this animal and something that makes it safe. "The babies hide in seaweed from hungry fish and crabs" is one example. "Words to Know," table of contents and an index lend this book to teaching the parts of a book. This would be a welcome addition to the elementary library. Reviewer: Chris Newsham

Each book features eight animals, including one from an endangered species, found in the featured habitat. A small world map identifies the biome's location. On each spread, a full-color photo of the animal faces three or four factual sentences plus a smaller photo. These titles are acceptable as browsing items, but they aren't substantial enough for reports. They could supplement or update collections where animal books are in demand.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato
