Editorial Reviews

Los Angeles Times - Deborah Netburn
Forget Dr. Spock or "What to Expect When You're Expecting" or even "Happiest Baby on the Block." When it comes to essential reading for brand-new or expecting parents, nothing beats "Baby Bargains," the Consumer Reports-like guide to baby products written by Denise and Alan Fields.

The usefulness of this book has less to do with how to clip coupons or shop for deals online and way more to do with helping overwhelmed and exhausted parents-to-be navigate the endless choices in baby gear!
Reader - Bunny Momtobe
This book is a very helpful resource. It saves a lot of time trying to compare products and determine which ones to consider. Its organized by type of product and has all the major brands covered. Its gives a letter grade A, B, C, etc to each product or brand so you can easily skip to the better graded items to help narrow down the overwhelming number of choices in baby products. I highly recommend it.
Reader - Monkeys Mommy
As a first time mom the idea of shopping for our new baby was completely overwhelming. This book has it all. It has saved me hundreds of hours combing the internet to research and find reviews, not to mention eliminated countless headaches! It's basically a one stop shop. I've been recommending it to all of my mommy friends!
Reader - J S McCarthy
Buy this book! It is a fabulous resource for a new mom, not just because of the money saving aspects, but because it made me really research what baby products were made off - i.e. cotton vs rayon clothing, foam vs coil mattresses, etc. I have totally rethought my purchases after reading this book.

    I Also Recommend:

This book made baby shopping a snap!

My husband and I completely relied on Baby Bargains when I was pregnant with our first child. It reviews almost all baby products from carseats to shopping cart covers. The reviews are based on safety, reliability, cost, as well as parent recommendations. Each section reviews and compares major brands and gives each a rating. What I especially like is that the writers give their top picks at the end of each section in "good," "better," and "best" categories. The book aims to help you save money, but it also discusses areas in which you should not scrimp (usually for safety reasons or because it will cost you more in the long run). Now that our daughter is nine months, we are using the updated version to make decisions about a new carseat and an umbrella stroller. This book has been a lifesaver, and it is a must-have for new parents!

Who made this husband and wife experts in this field?!? My wife's experience with this book was very poor. These reviews, and much better ones, can be found elsewhere on the web for FREE!

Don't buy, the publishers think they are rock stars. Their reviews are no different than your friends reviews. I know the industry well, I've met the publishers, I know their game. Its not in their best interest to disparage the large players in the industry. Stick with a professional publishing group, like consumer reports.

There are no pictures or charts in ebook version.  This really upset me.  This problem, unlike what a previous reviewer stated, is not a B&N problem, it is a problem with the actual book publisher, the Kindle version also does not have pics or charts.
I would recommend this book, but i highly suggest you get the paper copy. The ebook copy is really bad and at the time i bought it NO ONE on either site had reviewed the ebook version, so I had no warning- you do- so buyer beware!

BUYER BEWARE! I would give this zero stars if I could.  The Nookbook does NOT contain any charts, graphs, or pictures even though Barnes & Noble website indicates "DETAILED CHARTS that compare brands of cribs, strollers, car seats and more!" This is FALSE advertising!  Don't be fooled, the Nookbook only has text.  BN refuses to give me a refund for this and claimed that “Because this file is provided by the publisher, pictures and other graphic content will be decided by that person.”  I will NEVER buy a Nookbook again because the content description provided by Barnes & Noble can not be trusted.

    A Big Help

This book is great. It is full of really good research on everything baby, and lots of good advice. It is an easy and fairly entertaining read, too. I highly recommend it for expectant parents.

    Great Resource!

We bought this book based on a friend's recommendation and it has been very useful! Great reviews for just about everything you could imagine - discusses overall brands as well as individual items, plus a registry guide. Index makes it easy to quickly find things. Takes into account quality, safety, cost, and even customer service.

Lots of great information - takes time to read.

I haven't had as much time as I would like to really read and follow all their advice but what I have found has been helpful. I will keep it and use it for the final months of my pregnancy to gather remaining items.

If you buy the paperback version of this book the poor ratings wouldn't exist. This book, when purchased as an actual copy, has excellent lists, charts, diagrams and recommendations that made registering for baby items a breeze.

    Super helpful

Good overall tips on what to look for when buying products, things to keep in mind as your baby grows (i.e. you're shopping for a 9 month old who will be crawling all over & pulling on things, not just a newborn who sleeps all day) and super helpful in wading through what's a waste of time and not. Brand by brand reviews haven't been as helpful b/c not all stores available to me carry the ones they describe to be able to comparison shop between them - but overall, would recommend this to anyone who's facing shopping for their first baby. A friend recommended it to me, and I'm glad she did!

MUST READ for first time parents!!!

My husband and I bought this book after a friend of ours recommended it. This book is absolutely worth every penny! I read it after we had nearly completed our baby registry, and it really helped us put everything in perspective: What we need, what's a waste of money, what we THINK we need but is actually dangerous for the baby, and so on. I added, deleted and modified my baby registry based on this book, as well as user reviews on the store websites where I registered. All first time parents need to read this book before they go out and waste time and money on baby items that aren't really necessary.

A MUST HAVE BOOK if you're expecting!

A very good friend bought this book for me and it was one of the best gifts I received during my pregnancy. My husband and I lived by this book in preparing for our baby. I have bought this book for two of my friends who are pregnant. I would highly recommend this book!

    MUST HAVE

This book is a must have for any new or soon to be parents. Use the time during pregnancy to read this book and make important decisions about the necessary baby equipment you will be needing to buy. Great suggestions and hints as far as safety, durability, versatility, overall quality & usefulness, etc. Friends who didn't take the time to read this book and do the research were indeed sorry. They wasted money, and didn't get what they really wanted for their baby.

    Focuses the enormous selection

This book helped me hone in on various areas that seem to have so many name brands and qualtities. Also, on things that we really don't need despite magazines and baby stores telling you that you do need. I will loan it and/or borrow it to other pregnant friends.

Great comprehensive review of baby products!

This book was recommended to me by a friend whose wife just had a baby 2 months before. I'm using this book as my baby bible for which products to buy or register for, and which to avoid at all costs. This is my first baby, and I was pretty close to clueless about everything you need for baby. This is great! I've saved more money than the cost of the book quadruple times over. The book also refers you to their website for supplemental reviews for some things. Excellent buy!
