Overview

Even babies can be kind, and for the youngest of children, Jane Cowen-Fletcher’s endearing artwork makes the possibilities ever so appealing.

What are some easy ways to be kind? Say hi to your friend. Be nice to your puppy. If you see someone fall down, maybe you can help them up! How about sharing your cookies or crackers? Or giving a tired someone a ride in your little wagon? From taking turns to saying you’re sorry, trying not to be angry to giving a big hug, these simplest of gestures, rendered in Jane Cowen-Fletcher’s adorable style, show that being kind feels so good that even a baby will want to try it.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
While not very realistic, this useful book models ideal toddler behavior. Cowen-Fletcher takes readers through scenes of two toddlers playing and interacting. This duo eagerly takes turns on playground equipment, happily shares snacks and gently takes care of a puppy. The preachy rhyming text addresses readers directly, telling them how to behave in various situations, but Cowen-Fletcher's soft art gives each line of verse a grounded sweetness. While some of the children's movements and actions may be a little too mature for their age, she does capture the posture and proportions of her cute cherubs faithfully in soft watercolors and pastels outlined in delicate pencil. One page spread, showing the youngsters sharing warmth in winter and shade in the summer, jars and feels out of place, since most of the tableaux seem to take place over the course of one play date. Parents, who are absent in these scenes and obviously not needed in this Utopian world, will appreciate Cowen-Fletcher's positive approach. An Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten for the still-in-diapers set. (Board book. 18 mos.-3)
