Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book in the animal babies series by Barron's is filled with simple scientific facts about bears. Each two-page spread asks a simple question about bears and their behavior, answers the question, and shows photographs of various bears. The photographs are beautiful, featuring adorable photographs of polar bear cubs, panda bear cubs, koala bear cubs, black and brown bear cubs, adult bears, and even teddy bears. Following the factual section of the book is a crafts section with five different bear craftssome for younger children and others for older children. This would be a really fun book to read aloud to a preschool or early elementary classroom. Following the reading with one of the book's crafts would make a nice unit study on bears. 2000, Barron's Educational Series, Ages 3 to 9.

They're cute and fuzzy filling us with a sense of joy and wonder throughout many regions of the world--they are bear cubs. With a creative format and beautiful photographs and graphics, this book is excellent for early learners. An English version of a Spanish original, this book is part of the "Animal Babies" series. It is divided into two sections. The first is the "Facts" section that is in a question and answer format. The second section is titled "Fun" where different craft ideas are illustrated and explained. These crafts enable children to better absorb what they have learned from the text. The projects are simple, and the creators of the book have provided templates. One quibble--the book includes Koalas, and a young child might not recognize that a koala is actually a marsupial not a bear. 2000, Barron's Educational Series Inc., Ages 3 to 8, $5.95.
