Faithful to Matthew and Luke but resourceful in its storytelling, this Nativity story is a quiet gem among the myriad Gospel adaptations available. Upon hearing of God's plan for her, Mary "went around with singing in her heart," an image that conveys the joy of Jesus' arrival in the world--the heart of the Christmas celebration. Ferri's dusty earth tones and round, stylized figures transport readers to the ancient Middle East. Playful touches, like an ever-present pup and childlike angels, enhance the appeal to young readers. Ages 5-9. (Sept.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The retelling of the Nativity story is true to the biblical sources but it uses contemporary language to make the story more accessible to today's readers. The illustrations are simplified but quite powerful. Joseph is shown as an attentive and caring husband. Light fills the stable after the birth of Jesus and angles spread light and sing in the heavens while spread the news to amazed shepherds tending their flocks. The wise men followed the star that brought them to Jesus where they presented their gifts. In the illustrations Jesus looks to be at least six months or more in age which may a little different interpretation than is usually given.
