Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Squeaks, creaks, snaps, and jingles are just some of the sounds that a baby hears "when he listens hard with his little ears." This sweet book in the "Little Golden Book Classic" series was first published in 1960. Rhyming verses describe the various sounds a baby hears that range from the sounds of a clock, the beats on his drum, and the jingles of his mother's keys. Beautifully illustrated in pastel colors, the baby has a cute plump face and is shown doing numerous activities drawn against interesting and timeless backgrounds. The baby sees the fire truck on the street, he plays with a toy train, and then his teddy bear falls "bumpety bumpety" down the stairs. Lots of lyrical sounds, such as "tum tum tum die dum" and "clickity clack, clickety clack" make this a wonderful book to read aloud to young children. The familiar and distinctive golden binding, small size, and hard cover add to its appeal. This is a lovely book to include in a collection of first books for children. Reviewer: Vicki Foote

Meet the Author

Deceased. ESTHER WILKIN (1902-1985) wrote several Little Golden Books for her sister Eloise Wilkin to illustrate.

Deceased. ELOISE WILKIN (1904-1987) is one of the most beloved and prolific Golden Books illustrators. To many, her work embodies "that Little Golden Book feeling" as well as a certain, and seemingly simpler, time in America. Wilkin's loving depiction of the natural world, and her paintings of cherubic, chubby children, helped make Golden Books an icon. Her Little Golden Books My Little Golden Book About God and Prayers for Children have never been out of print.
