Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With some fresh takes on a familiar theme, newcomer Vestergaard captures the nuances of life in this winsome collection of verse. The title poem issues an invitation to "go get your baby, come sit for a while-/ We'll celebrate all kinds of love, baby-style." Several assume an adult's perspective: "Bubble beard drips down your chin,/ Sudsy fingers scrub your skin./ Slippy, slidey, soapy joking-/ Why am I the one who's soaking?!" a mother asks rhetorically in "Bathtime." A clever double entendre in "His Grace" pictures Baby presiding in his high chair ("Baby sits and watches us/ From his royal chair"), from which he adds the finishing touch to a pre-meal prayer ("As we sit to give our thanks,/ Baby nods and then,/ Soon as Mommy's done with grace,/ Baby shouts `Amen!' "). Curly ribbons of pink and blue punctuated by baby accoutrements border each of Wallace's (Flower Girl) softly rendered watercolors. Their homey style conveys both the precious and the humorous, as when a cheeky cherub catapults soup across the table at a weary mother: "We are wearing soup for lunch:/ Me a little,/ You, a bunch!" or an adorable infant grimaces with one lower tooth, framed in a wreath of flowers, hearts, crayons and teething rings: "Baby's grumpy,/ Down and dumpy!/ In those gums/ There's something bumpy!" Ending with an exhortation to "spoil those babies with one extra kiss," these snapshots of an infant's endearing moments will appeal to baby lovers of all ages. Ages 2-up. (Dec.) PreS-K-An assortment of babies and toddlers experience common events of childhood. Adorable borders frame each page, which contains a single short verse and an accompanying illustration. The detailed watercolors are soft and perfectly reflect the affectionate tone. The resulting tribute is charming overall, but uneven in the quality of text. Some poems are spirited and imaginative, but others seem saccharine and overly cute. Points of view switch from child to adult, and it's not always clear who is speaking. Not one of the stronger poetry collections for this audience.-Julie Joy, Winfield Public Library, KS Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A former teacher and nanny, Vestergaard crafts more than 20 odes to babies in her debut for children. Many speak from the siblings’ perspective. "In the Sandbox," for example, reflects the joys and frustrations of having a new brother or sister: "Baby’s small / I am big / baby sits / While I dig. / Baby dumps / When I fill. / Baby grabs. / Then I spill." Others, such as "Two of a Kind" ("Not much hair—just like Grandpa") and "Rockabye" ("In Gram’s arms / Cozy tight . . . In her voice / Such sweet delight") focus on the special role of grandparents. Most are simple ditties, joyful observations of all things baby. "Diapers," for example, is just two lines long: "Wiggle waggle to and fro . . . / Sure looks like you want to GO!" Wallace’s (One . . . Two . . . Three . . . Sassafras, p. 1039, etc.) humorous vignette shows a child toddling off while her diapers reveal a bit of bare bottom. Throughout, Wallace illustrates each poem with pastel-hued watercolors; playful borders of ribbon, toys, booties, and other baby accouterments draw poem and picture together. With their musical beat, Vestergaard’s shorter poems ("Fancy Feet" and "Lunch," for example) are bound to appeal to the youngest listeners. Unfortunately, the rest of this collection is pure pablum. (Poetry. 2-5)
