Overview

Making terrific use of a tight and funky band, two spirited singers, and some game contributions from kids, Baby Loves Jazz transforms children's favorites into swinging ditties. Trumpeter (and co-producer) Steve Bernstein -- along with such notable players as keyboardist John Medeski and bassist Lonnie Plaxico -- refashions such perennials as "Old MacDonald," "Ten Little Monkeys," "The Wheels on the Bus," and "Paw Paw Patch" with infectious jazz rhythms and brassy arrangements. Vocalists Sharon Jones and Babi Floyd couldn't be better, infusing their performances with fun and vigor, never condescending to their young audience. Rhythm -- of the funky New Orleans variety -- rather than improvisation is the main ingredient here; kids will pick straight up on the groove and become familiar with the instrumentation of a typical jazz ensemble. And while this delightful project may not have the little ones clamoring for Miles, Coltrane, or Monk anytime soon, it's a fine introduction to the music's swinging climate.

All Music Guide - Matt Collar
Verve's Baby Loves Jazz: Go Baby Go! features an unexpected ensemble of New York jazz scenesters performing a mix of well-known children's songs and new compositions geared toward kids. Led by former Lounge Lizards member, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, the group also features such well-respected artists as keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Lonnie Plaxico, baritone saxophonist Briggan Krauss and others. Anyone familiar with the work of these musicians may find the notion of them making an album of children's music a bit strange, as these artists are largely known for performing edgy, often avant-garde jazz that pushes the boundaries of "tradition." However, it is just that outside-the-norm approach that makes Baby Loves Jazz so appealing. This is bumptiously funky, respectably organic and engaging music that truly aspires to get young children excited about jazz. In a deeper, more conceptual sense that means real people playing real instruments and conveying real emotions that are positive and fun. In fact, adult listeners of mainstream and experimental jazz should find much to treasure here as the musicians invest such tracks as "Happy and You Know It," "Working on the Railroad" and "Old MacDonald" with their unique styles and personalities that will be immediately recognizable to longtime fans. Brilliantly, Bernstein has allowed for both the singing of a song's melody by vocalists Sharon Jones and Babi Floyd and solos from the bandmembers while always being mindful of keeping a child engaged through rhythm. For any parents tired of insipid, "canned" children's music Baby Loves Jazz will come as an inspired antidote.

We've had this for about 6 months and our 3 year old now wants to sing "Old McDonald has a Band" instead of farm. He loves pretending to play the tumpet, sax, bass, piano and drums and he's gotten pretty good at scatting, all from the backseat of the car during our 10 minute commutes to and from pre-school. He actually tells me what song he wants to hear (it changes almost daily) and sings along, getting almost every word and note right. He especially likes "Old McDonald", "Paw Paw Patch" and "You are my Sunshine". I have given this disc to music teacher friends and they are incorprating it into their teaching, too. It's a hit!

This CD is great! It is very peppy and has adults as well as children singing. My 2 year old loves it. It is NOT for naptime! He hears this and wants to play. He especially loves "If You're Happy & You Know It".
