Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
What is a marsupial? They are mammals. They have a backbone, are warm-blooded, and they are born live, but something makes them different. When marsupial babies are born they are not full developed. The joeys, as they are called, often develop in a mother's pouch where they nurse and grow larger over a period of weeks or months. Some pouches are in the front, like the kangaroo and quokka. While the koala and wombat have pouches that face outward toward its bottom. The opossum by contrast has a very small pouch that only covers her milk teats. Most marsupials live in Australia or on the nearby islands and in a variety of habitats. The wombat lives on grasslands, in mountains, and in forests along the edges of oceans while wallabies live in deserts and tree kangaroos live in rain forests. There are excellent pictures of various kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas. Tasmanian devils are also marsupials and they are omnivores, just like bilbies, while numbats and quolls are carnivores. Readers also learn that opossums are marsupials and that they live in the U.S. and Canada. These are not the same as possums that live in the Australian region. The closing page presents words to know, a picture index, and a list of other words found in the text. The book is filled with interesting information and the kind of facts that kids will love sharing at home or with friends. The full color illustrations are excellent and bring the points home. All in all, a good addition for any school, home or public library. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
