Overview

Mixing girl-next-door cuteness with a flair for bubble-gum-pop ditties that stress wide-eyed romance and render sex innocuous, this 17-year-old Louisiana native is like a Debbie Gibson for the new millennium. But Britney Spears, a former Mouseketeer, has already secured a unique niche in pop history: In January, she became the first new artist to simultaneously have a No. 1 album and single on the Billboard pop charts. The album, ...BABY ONE MORE TIME -- Spears's debut -- has since gone double platinum, and the driving single, which bears the same name, has become a staple of Top 40 radio. Spears's plans for the future include touring and shopping (she cut her professional teeth performing in malls), and she has also expressed a desire to record a duet with Madonna -- whose '80s hit "Like a Virgin" is, after all, ripe for a remake.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
At the beginning of the '90s, teen currency shifted from bubblegum'n'Tiger Beat to grunge'n'Maximum Rock & Roll. Although it may have been pushed from the spotlight, teen pop hadn't died -- it, in a way, went underground, spending time on the fringes of pop culture. One of the leading lights of the exiled teen brigade was The New Mickey Mouse Club. For several years, it toiled away on the Disney Network, earning a small fan base -- but, more importantly, providing a launchpad for several careers, including that of Britney Spears. Like her fellow NMMC alumni *N Sync, Spears shot to stardom in the late '90s, just as she was on the verge of late adolescence. By that time, everything old was new again. Albums like her debut, ...Baby One More Time, were topping the charts as if they were Hangin' Tough, which is only appropriate since it sounded as if it could have been cut in 1989, not 1999. ...Baby One More Time has the same blend of infectious, rap-inflected dance-pop and smooth balladry that propelled the New Kids and Debbie Gibson, due to the Backstreet Boys' producer, Max Martin, who is also the mastermind behind Spears' debut. He has a knack for catchy hooks, endearing melodies, and engaging Euro-dance rhythms, all of which are best heard on the hits: the ingenious title track, "Sometimes," "(You Drive Me) Crazy," and the utterly delightful, bubblegum-ragga album track "Soda Pop." Like many teen pop albums, ...Baby One More Time has its share of well-crafted filler, but the singles, combined with Britney's burgeoning charisma, make this a pretty great piece of fluff.

I, like, really love this record. I mean, it's like, wow, I just can't believe how beautiful Britney is, I mean, u know, like to look at. I'm, like 19, and some of my friends say I'm too old for Ms. Spears music, but, it's like, who really cares about the music, she is so gorgeous to look at. I did listen to the CD once, I think, I don't really remember.

The first time I listened to Baby One More Time, I was instantly reminded of the fun and upbeat songs of the eighties. Tiffany's "I think we're alone now", and Cyndi Lauper's "Girls just want to have fun" came to mind. Although I do not like Britney or her music, I found the songs to be catchy, and easy to sing along to. They make a great karaoke night as well. This is a likeable CD for those who enjoy the other teen pop princesses like Christina and Jessica, or just like to go out for a night of karaoke. "Sometimes" is one of the slow songs, but still as easy to listen to as "Baby...One more time." The lyrics do tend to be racy and would be more suitable for older teens. There are alot of sexual references, but nothing offensive.

I THINK THAT THIS ALBUM COULD HAVE BEEN ALOT BETTER. HER SONGS ARE FULL OF UP BEAT TEMPO THAT ARE SO MELODRAMATIC,IT HELPS COVER UP THE FACT THAT SHE CANNOT SING. THE MUSIC IS CLUSTERED ,AND SPEAR'S VOICE ONLY EXACERBATES TO THE WRECKING OF THE ALBUM. THE ONLY REASON THAT THIS ALBUM DID SO WELL IS BECAUSE MANY TEENS WERE FINALLY BEING INTRODUCED TO THIS POP GENRE FOR THE FIRST TIME. NOT KNOWING WHAT EXACTLY IT IS, TEENS WERE ONLY INDULGED IN THE CATCHY DANCE MOVES AND FAST BEAT, BUT OBLIVIOUS TO THE REAL THING THAT MATTER, SOUL AND VOICE. ALL OF WHICH, THIS ALBUM APPARENTLY DID NOT HAVE.

I used to hate Britney Spears, but then got addicted to ''...Baby One More Time''. So in January 2000 I got the ''...Baby One More Time'' CD and I've never regretted it, and I've had it 8 months now and still love to listen to it all the way through. The title track is the best song, but I also love ''I Will Be There'', ''Thinkin' About You'', ''From the Bottom of My Broken Heart'' and ''Born To Make You Happy''. Buy this CD you'll love it!

This album is really good! Some of the tunes make you want to get up and dance, especially ''Crazy'' and ''...Baby One More Time''. This album is awesome and worth the money!

At 15 with an album selling 120,000 copies in it's first day, she's good & I mean GOOD! Christina Aguilera's good, Jessica Simpson's good, Mandy Moore's good, too. In a way they're all competing against each other, but they're all in it together. Think about it : they're showing waht I call GIRL POWER!

Britney is the greatest singer and the most beautiful women I have ever seen. She has stolen my heart.
