Joey, a young grackle, watches the Farmer weeding the garden and sees the Farmer's hoe make a big hole next to Baby Pumpkin. Joey shouts to everyone in the garden that Baby Pumpkin is in trouble. Gretel, Joey's great-great-great-grandmother, watches in shock as Baby Pumpkin rolls into the hole and gets hurt by a sharp rock.

Everyone in the garden starts talking about what they can do to rescue Baby Pumpkin. The oldest and wisest of the garden inhabitants, Gretel, gathers everyone to help solve the problem.

Born and raised in a small town, a hundred miles from nowhere, Sharman Alsop spent much of her childhood reading books from the city library. Sharman's parents were avid readers, and with little money to spend on entertainment, they took advantage of checking out books for free from the library.
