Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Baby See, Baby Do! by Malachy Doyle, illus. by Britta Teckentrup, a baby copies his compatriots in the animal kingdom. In one funny spread, "slippery baby otters love to splash around," the flap on the facing page reveals the bubbly baby in the tub with mother ("I like splashing, too"). Mixed-media collage illustrations pump up the comedy. (Mar) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Here's another warm and fuzzy baby book. This one is a British import with flaps and tabs to flip and pull. There's no plot, but lots of animals are used as comparisons: seahorses ride in their father's pouches, baby does, too; baby otters like to splash, so does baby in the tub with mother. The flaps are sometimes hard to maneuver, but practice will probably loosen them up. Teckentrup's pen and ink and watercolor illustrations are bright and evocative. It's a pleasant book, if a bit pricey. 2002, Putnam,

Kirkus Reviews
An ingenious lift-the-flap, oversized board book explores the similarities between animal and human babies. Simply worded sentences describe a young, wild creature frolicking with its parent. Readers can lift the flap on the facing page to discover a human baby occupied in a similar fashion: in one spread, a seahorse perches in its father's pouch while a rosy-cheeked infant takes a ride in dad's baby carrier. Rather than the more traditional fare of farm animals, Doyle (Owen and the Mountain, p. 44, etc.) selects exotic fauna to compare the nurturing behaviors among various species. Included in the tale are zebra foals, ostriches, and even diminutive marmosets. Teckentrup's (Well, a Crocodile Can, not reviewed, etc.) color-filled illustrations feature wide-eyed creatures in habitats that are more whimsical than reality-based. Her collage-style illustrations incorporate a variety of textures into the pictures, giving each page depth and dimension. Oversized flaps are appropriate for toddler's hands. However, the heft of the pages is a bit on the slim side (more heavy stock than typically sturdy) and may or may not hold up under repeated handling over time. An amiable little tale for fledgling explorers. (Picture book. 2-4)
