Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“This offers so much to look at that children will be turning pages after they know the story by heart. A whole new way to think about baby showers.” —Starred, Booklist

“A fun family read-aloud.” -School Library Journal

“An engaging and ever-so-slightly surreal treatment of an age-old childhood wish.” Kirkus Reviews

Children's Literature - Janice DeLong
From the front cover to the last page, the young reader or listener will giggle at the idea of the kind of baby shower award-winning author and illustrator Zalben is suggesting. Succinctly put, although there is a real shower for a baby, the real stars of this show are baby animals. Lambs chase each other across the title page, puppy footprints decorate rugs, kitties and "meows" fill a dust cover and best of all, little dogs scamper everywhere. Zoe is nearly consumed with the desire to have a pet, and when her mother tries to distract Zoe with thoughts of her aunt's approaching baby shower, Zoe becomes her number one assistant, with the hope that a pet will be her reward. One of the most delightful lines in the story occurs when Zoe realizes her relationship with the expected child and exclaims, "I'm going to be a big cousin!" However, the hope of a pet of her own never leaves Zoe's mind for a moment. Just as the little girl is falling asleep, the impossible happens: a baby shower! A baby shower of animals! Weathermen are stumped; traffic is tangled; stores are closed, except, of course for pet stores. Miraculously, Zoe's wish is granted in the most charming of ways, and her aunt gets more than the audience has expected. The last line of text sums up the feeling of the book: "...life could not get any better." This is truly a "feel good" book for the adult reader and the listening child. Reviewer: Janice DeLong
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Zoe wants a pet more than anything in the world. Her bedroom is furnished with pet decor; she has paw-print rugs and wears bunny slippers. In fact, she thinks about pets all day long. Zoe's mom tries to take the child's mind off her obsession by encouraging her to help make decorations for her Aunt Ellie's upcoming baby shower. That night, she dreams about a shower of baby animals falling from the sky. Zalben's wordplay is evident as a news clip inserted into the illustration adds to this whimsical tale. "It is really raining cats and dogs," reports the weatherman. The day of the shower, "lightning struck and thunder roared, followed by a whimper, a scratch, and a tiny bark." Readers will smile as a puppy appears on Zoe's aunt's porch. The cartoon-style illustrations create a pleasing interplay between text and pictures. Zalben's use of white space throughout the background draws readers to the warm colors, evoking a cozy mood of hearth and home. Some of the pictures are paired with alliterative phases ("Turtles tangled traffic!"), making this choice a fun family read-aloud. This sweet story ends with charm and wit, including the name of the newfound puppy: "Baby."—Melissa Smith, Green Valley Library, Henderson, NV
Publishers Weekly
Zalben doesn't leave much to readers' imagination in this meticulously inked but rather woolly tale of wish fulfillment. Zoe wants a pet: “She'd stare at dogs on street corners, cats curled up in windows, and squirrels in the garden.” Her yearnings conflate with her anticipation of an aunt's upcoming baby shower, producing the book's centerpiece, an eight-page dream about a downpour consisting entirely of adorable animal babies: “Rabbits rained on rooftops. Lambs lolled on lawns. Turtles tangled traffic!” Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs it ain't: the watercolors are pretty, but a teensy-weensy sense of scale makes the images feel overworked and visually befuddling—even young eyes may need to squint. All the loose ends are tied up in short order: the shower is a success and following a thunderstorm, a stray puppy suddenly appears at her aunt's house, ready to be adopted. Zalben (Brenda Berman, Wedding Expert) gets in some great lines—in answer to the question of whether the baby is a boy or a girl, Zoe's aunt answers, “I hope so”—but the deus ex machina ending is unsatisfying. Ages 3–7. (Mar.)
Kirkus Reviews
Zoe wants a pet more than anything. She even dreams about it, and on the night before her aunt's baby shower, she dreams of animal babies. "Lambs [loll] on lawns," baby "[r]abbits [rain] on rooftops" when the weatherman reports "a downpour of babies." Her gift to Aunt Ellie is a picture of that baby-animal shower. When she and her mom leave the baby shower, a spark of thunder and lightning and-lo!-a wet little puppy appears, the answer to Zoe's dreams. She names him Baby, and when Aunt Ellie has her twins-a boy and a girl-Zoe introduces her puppy: "I have a new baby, too!" Adorable pictures with winsome prints and patterns and lots of white space bring out the lovingly detailed figures of children, animals and adults. An engaging and ever-so-slightly surreal treatment of an age-old childhood wish. (Picture book. 4-7)
