Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
During that first year when a baby is communicating all its needs without word power, parents sometimes wrack their brains trying to understand what their child is telling them. This can be especially true during mealtimes, when babies want more of something but can't say what, or when they've had it and the food lands on the wall. Attention all parents -- look no further! Baby Signs authors Linda Acredolo, Ph.D., and Susan Goodwyn, Ph.D., have put together this child-friendly board book to help teach mealtime sign language before a baby's language development.

Armed with easy signing instructions for parents and images that will click with infants, Acredolo and Goodwyn's book shows ten signs for children to use during meals. For example, one of the more difficult concepts to learn, "more," shows the word, alongside a bottle pouring more juice and a large stack of cookies. Opposite is a picture of a baby making the "more" sign, with the words "fingertips to palm" giving parental instruction. Other signs -- such as "eat," "all gone," "cereal," and "bib" -- follow the same format. The final spread shows all the objects without words or instructions, so babies and parents can "quiz" themselves on the signs together.

Baby Signs for Mealtime is an excellent tool for learning essential meal communication. The book's sturdy format will hold up to babies' chewing and grasping, and colorful pictures of babies performing mealtime signs will have infants mimicking them in no time. A helpful book to alleviate some of that crying and frustration -- and that includes the parents! (Matt Warner)

Children's Literature
It takes a little time for babies to actually communicate with words. They do communicate with sounds almost immediately, but they can also learn signs or gestures to get their needs and feelings across. In Baby Signs for Mealtime, simple gestures allow babies and toddlers to communicate what they see, what they need, and even how they feel. For example they can pretend to eat certain foods, use a fingertip to palm to indicate a desire for more, blow on something hot. This board book is filled with attractive babies from a variety of ethnic heritages expressing themselves through motions. The authors, both with Ph.Ds, note that using signs can reduce frustrations and tantrums and help babies learn to talk sooner. They also encourage parents and caregivers to start early—when a child starts to wave bye-bye and when using signs say the words. There really is no limitation—parents and babies can make up plenty of signs of their own. A companion book to My First Baby Signs. 2002, HarperFestival/HarperCollins,

Great companion to any household baby signing

Gave this to my daughter for her first birthday. We had already been working on various "baby signs" and she did several. This book is a nice companion to parental demonstration of signs. The pictures are engaging and easily communicate the signs. My daughter loves to look at the faces of the little ones in the book and makes the signs being shown.

My 3-year son loves this book too. He likes to show the signs to his little sister!

    Fun and Educational!

I love this book! My 20 month old daughter doesn't talk yet, so we use a lot of signs. I picked up this book to help her learn some more. We have had this book for 1 week and she now makes the signs as I turn the pages of the book! I am so proud of her, and thankful that someone thought to create this book.

    Excellent starting piont for signing

This is the first sign language book we purchased and it has been great. Since there are long periods several times a day eating in the high chair, I decided to use the time to learn, as well as eat. This book shows simple signs and sweet babies doing the signs so your child can relate.
