Because sign language involves motion, this superb book is more effective as a movable book than it ever would have been without the pull-tab actions. If there is a deaf child in your family, the entire family will want a copy; but you do not have to be deaf to realize what a special book this is. The signs for seventeen different words are illustrated in words, pictures, and motion. Hands and arms move to show the actions that make the signs understandable. Under the first word in the book, bed, are the words "Press hands together and place under cheek." Pull the tab and a little boy, his hands together as if in prayer, tucks his hands under his cheek. On the opposite page a little girl illustrates the sign for the word blanket. "Pinch fingers and raise under chin." Pull the tab and the little girl makes a sign that is clearly pulling a blanket up to her chin with her hands. Other words the book illustrates are: eat, drink, more, play, book, help, yes, no, hurt, quiet, bath, finished, daddy, mommy, and I love you. In the center of each page a happy child does ordinary happy childhood things such as jumping on the bed, playing in the bathtub, and feeding himself dinner in his high chair. As you learn the signs for help and hurt, you realize that sign language is more than just fun to read about. It is an early and necessary way for young deaf children to communicate! All of the signs in this book are easily understood and easily learned. The author and artist have imbued the book with a warm sense of family fun and affection which will inspire its readers, young and old, to recognize that we all have the same need and desire to relate to others; and it will surely encourageclassmates, teachers and friends to want to learn more about sign language and become comfortable around anyone who is deaf.     Another beautiful Sabuda pop-up!

    Loving Sabuda popups, I pre-ordered this for my grandson. What a beautiful little book and a great way to learn some basic sign language for baby and parents/grandparents alike. It's a delight and one of those special books for collecting and reading.

    great idea for new mothers

    Great for communicating with your child before he/she learns
    to talk. Sabuda is such a master at pop-ups and they are so much fun to look
    at. I have bought several of these books for friends.
