Overview

The proven and original program for communicating with your baby—featuring American Sign Language-compatible signs

If you have struggled unsuccessfully to decode your baby's grunts and grabs, resulting in tearful frustration for both you and your child, there is Baby Signs. Based on a method first developed by Drs. Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn in 1982 and on nearly 30 years of research, this classic bestseller shows you how to encourage your baby’s use of nonverbal gestures to enhance communication.

Simple hand movements signify objects, events, and needs, so your infant can enjoy interactions with you that otherwise would have been impossible until he or she could talk. Not only does the authors’ method help you and baby bond, but research shows that it can make learning to talk easier, reduce tears and frustration, boost self-esteem and confidence, and stimulate intellectual development.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Most parents are aware of the little gestures their infant uses to express various needs and moods, such as hunger or delight. This revised edition of a classic parenting work shows parents how they can expand their baby's use of nonverbal signs, greatly enhancing communication long before the infant is able to speak. In addition to illustrating a host of basic signs -- such as those for feelings, daily activities, and favorite foods -- the book helps readers develop their own signs with their child. Baby Signs also highlights the benefits of this method of communication, which include increased verbal and cognitive skills.
Library Journal
After studying baby sign language with a grant from the National Institutes of Health, Acredelo (psychology, Univ. of California, Davis) and Goldwyn (psychology, California State Univ., Stanislaus) conclude that babies who are taught to use signs to express basic ideas (e.g., fingers to the lips for eat, fingers raised in a V for bunny) before they can say the words are both happier because they can communicate with others and more adept at speaking once they begin to acquire language. This is not a scholarly exegesis of their findings but a practical, easy-to-use guide to teaching baby signs. The authors begin with an explanation of their findings and then offer a portfolio of suggested signs in which simple pictures are accompanied by description, memory aid, and suggested situations for use. The book has an upbeat, encouraging tone that parents will appreciate. Interestingly, Parenting magazine cited the authors' study in the "News and Reviews" section of the May 1996 issuebut failed to mention this book! For all parenting collections. excellant for new babies and pre-school age

This book was recommended by the mother for her baby and of course, we understand that this technique is something fairly new for the use of training infants to motion and voice understanding. It is a help for the infants when they get to school age and seem to advance much faster in their academics. An excellant book for any new baby no matter the gender.

    For child care workers too!!

This is a very helpful book for child care workers as well as for parents. Many of the children in the day care where I work use baby signs. I had never heard of this before I started working at the daycare. This book was very helpful in explainging how to use baby signs and how to model the signs. Great book!

    Excellent concept

We had to use sign language for our oldest who was behind in language skills due to ear infection complications. We found it so helpful that we used this book for our second child even though it was optional. Letting a young child communicate through more than grunts and fusses is good for the baby and good for the parents, too.

    A Must Have!

As a first time mother, I wanted to try Baby Signing to avoid some of the tantrums and frustration I have witnessed in other families in the infant/toddler years. I began modeling signs at about 6 months, and after several months of doing so, started seeing results. It was very exciting to see my daughter using her first sign, and the joy in her face when she realized I understood her request for 'more.' She just turned a year old, and knows about 10-12 signs. It is wonderful to be able to understand her needs/wants even though she cannot yet express them verbally. She is a very happy toddler, and I attribute much of that to what I have learned by reading this book. I highly recommend it!!!

Communication is KEY to solving problems even before a child can talk

This book has given us the tools to introduce a new effective form of communication with our baby. The tone of the book is friendly, supportive and easy to understand. We found the specific signs easy to model for our son. He seemed to pick it up so very quickly. Our 4 year-old daughter, although very capable verbally, also likes to talk to her baby brother with the sign language. We would also like to recommend another friendly book full of wit and wisdom that continues to clearly demonstrate how to communicate more effectively (with words) to the next age group called 'The Pocket Parent'. This book explains how important it is to give toddlers the words for their feelings early on which goes hand in hand with Baby Signs. The Pocket Parent gives hundreds of fast answers to handling most of the most challenging behaviors of a 2-5 year (i.e. tantrums, bedtime and mealtime refusals, I hate you's, gimmees, and whining). Both sanity saving books have lowered the frustration level of both parents and children in our family. We are so grateful that we found 2 books that have taught us specific ways of how to communicate much more effectively with our young children. Consider both reasonably priced books for your personal library.
