Meet the Author

Brynne McKay is an author, historian, and museum curator. At eight years old she buried herself behind the sofa and drew maps of a world she called Fetlana and wrote stories about a girl named Pelata who traveled it with her cats. She hasn't stopped writing since. She finished her first very bad novel at thirteen but didn't give up.

When not writing, Brynne enjoys reading, baking, crocheting, karate, constructing languages, studying history, Cat Stevens, and sewing. She lives in the Pacific Northwest. Though she has written four fantasy novels for young adults, this is her first adult book.

    Very good

I like mysteries and supense books best, but after reading one of those, I like to read something different or lighter. I loved the cover of Baby Steps to Mama and it sounded pretty good from the intro. It was not as light hearted as I expected, but it was oh so very good. I was moved to laughter and tears and as a mother and grandmother, I too, know about the super nova in my chest and foregoing conventional wisdom to do what I know is right for MY children. This book is well written and edited. It has the perfect flow. The descriptions and people are wonderful. I hope to read more by this author. This one I am going to archive.

    Real life

The book was ok but I felt there was a lot of rambling on. Took a little to really get into it. Was worth sticking with it.

    Absolutely Wonderful!

From page 1 on through the author's notes, this book was pure joy. Yes, there was sadness and tears. And laughter, too. But what pure joy to read a book, not about sex, or violence. What cursing there was, was used appropriately. (And there wasn't much.) This book was about loss, growing, love and families. How wonderful to read a book involving children where the children seemed real. The way they talked and behaved, the way the people around them interacted with the children. These children were written so true to life, they became real.

There are not enough stars to give this book. There are not enough words to describe how wonderful it is. Thank you so much to the author!!

Needed some editing but ok. A little far out in places with the thoughts, and fluffy inn places. But a good story overall.

    Unbelievable

The childrens mother and father die and are mourned by their children and family for about 15 minutes. The mother child bond is very strong and they don't prefer someone else after a month. I found the book to be overly simplistic an superficial.
