Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, Orchestral Suite No. 2, etc.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Emmanuel Pahud is a magnificent flutist, and on this attractive program of works by J. S. Bach, he shines with playing that is both stylish and expressive. Most impressive, though, is his flute's liquid silver tone -- pure and sweet, without a hint of breathiness -- that perfectly complements his sure sense of phrase. The suave Berlin Baroque Soloists join him for the greater part of the album: on the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto, the Second Orchestral Suite, and the charming G Major Trio Sonata. The ensemble performances are beautifully polished, with crisp yet flexible tempi and supple, elegant phrasing. But the highlight is surely the A Minor Partita for unaccompanied flute. Here Pahud needs no assistance, carrying off the tour-de-force music with a poise and panache that dazzles. This is Bach playing of the first caliber by one of the finest instrumentalists of our time. Eagerly recommended.
New York Times - David Mermelstein
[The] CD's real prize is the unaccompanied Partita in A minor (BWV 1013). Here, one can appreciate fully the flutist's virtues: musical grace, technical assurance and, most striking of all, a tone at once plangent and warm.
Gramophone - Duncan Druce
Altogether these are stylish performances, with excellent choices of tempo, awareness of the character of the dances in the Suite and the Partita, buoyant rhythms and beautiful shaping of phrases...very fine Bach playing, to be wholeheartedly recommended.
BBC Music Magazine
[Pahud] adopts a Baroque purity to ignite subtleties of dynamics and dialog which bring this Bach so alive. Harpsichordist Christine Schornsheim directs the Berlin Baroque Soloists in a crisp, jubilant Brandenburg No. 5.

Altogether these are stylish performances, with excellent choices of tempo, awareness of the character of the dances in the Suite and the Partita, buoyant rhythms and beautiful shaping of phrases...very fine Bach playing, to be wholeheartedly recommended.
