Bach: Cantatas and Arias

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Ian Bostridge is the most exciting tenor the British Isles have produced in some time, and on this recording of Bach cantatas and arias, he is once again in fine form. His voice -- clear and bright, with a pleasantly fast vibrato -- shines through in some of Bach's finest compositions for tenor. The familiar cantata Ich habe genug It Is Enough, in particular, receives a sensitive performance, as Bostridge conveys this plea to God for deliverance with moving lyricism. The middle aria, "Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen" Fall Asleep, My Weary Eyes is one of Bach's most delicate lullabies, and there are wonderful moments: the graceful tripping down the scale at "fallet sanft"...

The middle aria, "Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen" Fall Asleep, My Weary Eyes is one of Bach's most delicate lullabies, and there are wonderful moments: the graceful tripping down the scale at "fallet sanft" fall softly, or the sleepy pause at "stille Ruh" quiet rest. Fabio Biondi leads the early-instrument ensemble Europa Galante in an able accompaniment to Bostridge's lyrical lines. Listen especially to the silvery shimmer of the strings in the opening Sinfonia from the cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden Christ Lay in the Bonds of Death, or the recorders' poignantly intermingling melody in the Easter Oratorio's aria "Sanfte soll mein Todeskummer" Sweet Shall My Death Agony Be. With this rewarding, warmly musical album, Bostridge and Biondi prove themselves first-rate Bach interpreters.
