Bach: Cantatas

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Leonard
When Astree first released Christophe Coin's recordings of Bach's "Cantatas" in the mid-'90s, they were a twofold revelation. First, who knew that Christophe Coin, usually thought of as the great period instrument cellist, was also a great conductor? Second, who knew that Bach's "Cantatas," usually thought of as the gloomiest of works, could be so charming? And yet here is the proof: Coin's November 1993 recording of three "Cantatas" that is both expertly performed and interpretively delightful. Part of it, of course, is that Coin is not only a great cellist but a great musician. On this disc, Coin not only plays piccolo cello with supreme virtuosity and soulful ...

And yet here is the proof: Coin's November 1993 recording of three "Cantatas" that is both expertly performed and interpretively delightful. Part of it, of course, is that Coin is not only a great cellist but a great musician. On this disc, Coin not only plays piccolo cello with supreme virtuosity and soulful intensity, but leads his forces with the same virtuosity and intensity. And, of course, his forces were among the best of the time -- three of the soloists went on to successful solo careers -- and they match Coin for musicality. And, of course, Coin's choice of two of Bach's most delightful and charming "Cantatas" -- the cheerful "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele" and the joyful "Ich geh' und suche mit Verlangen" -- along with the obligatory gloomy "Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit." But, of course, these are still recordings of Bach's "Cantatas" and, of course, Lutheran gloom is religiously obligatory. Astree's digital sound is as ripe and warm and full now as it was in 1993.
