Overview

Tenors are heroes in the world of opera, but basses reign in Bach's musical universe. Bach always used a bass or baritone to sing Christ's words in his passions and cantatas, for example, and he wrote three solo cantatas for low male voice -- there are none for tenor. In these three beautiful works, the singer pleads passionately for deliverance through death with music that harmoniously blends world-weariness and serene radiance. Matthias Goerne gets this balance exactly right; his singing is full of quiet anguish and longing, his velvety voice as comforting as a warm embrace. The young German baritone is a superb musician, too. He creates miniature dramas out of the recitatives, and molds the arias' expansive phrases like a master cellist caressing the strings with his bow. A pair of brief sinfonias (excerpted from Cantata BWV 35) separate the three cantatas, offering lively yet appropriately sober instrumental interludes that also help bind the program together. The Camerata Academica Salzburg provides supple support under the direction of Roger Norrington, with particularly lovely, liquid playing by oboist Albrecht Mayer.
