Bach: Die Sonaten für Viola da gamba und Cembalo

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
By the time J. S. Bach wrote these sonatas, the viola da gamba was falling out of favor, and yet the aging master seems to have maintained a fondness for the instrument and its distinctive timbre. Distinguished recordings of these works have been made on both the cello and the modern viola, but for the real thing, only the incomparable gambist Jordi Savall will do. Here, he and frequent collaborator Ton Koopman on harpsichord revisit some of Bach's essential contributions to chamber music, which they have previously recorded for Virgin. In addition to the three sonatas, Savall himself has added another work to the gamba repertoire by faithfully transcribing Bach's Organ Sonata No. 5, BWV 529. Since the gamba sonatas themselves are mostly Bach's own arrangements of his trio sonatas, this is hardly an inauthentic practice. Savall's mastery of his instrument continues to astound, and the idiosyncratic sounds of the three different gambas he plays here are vibrantly captured in this splendidly recorded album.
