Bach for my Baby

All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
You can be sure that infants aren't fussy about their classical collections, but grownups may feel that Bach for My Baby is a bit much to give to their offspring, considering the sophistication of the performances, the substantial length of the selections, and the seriousness of the music. Assembled from EMI's back catalog, dating between 1965 and 2002, this disc is a budget CD that touches on Bach's best-known works in first-rate performances that are in no way simplified or shortened to accommodate babies or toddlers; the music is perhaps best appreciated by older children or young adults, who have longer attention spans and who can appreciate the weight of some of ...

All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
You can be sure that infants aren't fussy about their classical collections, but grownups may feel that Bach for My Baby is a bit much to give to their offspring, considering the sophistication of the performances, the substantial length of the selections, and the seriousness of the music. Assembled from EMI's back catalog, dating between 1965 and 2002, this disc is a budget CD that touches on Bach's best-known works in first-rate performances that are in no way simplified or shortened to accommodate babies or toddlers; the music is perhaps best appreciated by older children or young adults, who have longer attention spans and who can appreciate the weight of some of these pieces. Some babies may enjoy the lighter, brisker tracks, such as Sharon Isbin's vigorous performance of the Bourrée and Gigue from the "Suite for guitar in E minor," or Christian Tetzlaff's spry reading of the Prelude from the "Violin Partita No. 3 in E major"; but many more are slow and reverent choral excerpts from the cantatas, sober piano arrangements, or complex movements from concertos that are often played with repeats and that are likely to seem too long for restless tykes. Also, considering the high level of playing, in many cases following period practice on original instruments, this is music that some parents might find too advanced for little ones to understand, and best saved for later. Virgin's sound is generally even through the ADD and DDD mixes, though it seems artificially boosted in some tracks.
