Bach: Four Suites for Orchestra Arranged for Guitar Quartet

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Bach's music is perfectly suited to the guitar, although the composer never wrote a note for the instrument. With its articulate, harpsichord-like clarity, the guitar allows one to hear every contrapuntal detail, while the warmly resonant sound makes each strand of melody sing. So far, most guitarists have transcribed solo instrumental works -- for instance, Segovia's famous arrangements of the solo violin partitas and cello suites. But here we have orchestral music, and some of Bach's most festive, opulent scores, to boot. It would certainly be too much for a single guitar to handle, but four instruments have little trouble capturing the sonic splendor of these four orchestral suites, and the exquisite limpidity they produce makes up for the loss of orchestral color. The Brazilian Guitar Quartet offers spry yet stately performances. Slow movements, like the famous Air from the Third Suite, are taken at a brisk pace, as the guitar cannot sustain a tone for as long as a violin or even an oboe. The First Suite fares best, as it's the gentlest of the set, but hearing all four works in novel settings offers new revelations. One finds the lyrical elegance that lies buried within the craggy grandeur of the Fourth Suite, for example, as well as the sober melancholia that is usually obscured by the concerto-like virtuosity of the Second Suite. The BGQ lavish enormous love and care on these performances. Every phrase and inner voice glows like fine, freshly polished wood.
