Overview

During the 20th century, the art of the transcription fell into a state of disrepute. Authenticity became the goal. Merely playing Bach on the piano instead of the harpsichord often induced gasps of horror from purists. But now it seems that the times, they are a-changin'. Here's Les Violons du Roy, a respected period instrument orchestra, playing a transcription for strings of Bach's "Goldberg Variations." Conductor Bernard Labadie has fashioned a clever arrangement with rich interplay between solo instruments and the ensemble -- akin to the style of baroque concerti grossi such as Bach's own Brandenburgs. Not only does this configuration offer a rich variety of textures to engage the ear, but the use of solo strings gives an intimate atmosphere to the work's aria (theme) and its quieter variations. With exquisite, highly characterful playing -- and with Bach's complex counterpoint illuminated by the individual instrumental lines -- this version is sure to delight anyone who has fallen under the spell of this transcendental music.
