Graham Anthony Devine – J.S.BACH – GUITAR TRANSCRIPTIONS – Naxos
English guitar virtuoso Graham Anthony Devine has joined a long list of his predecessors in recording an all Bach program. As mentioned in Graham Wade’s always informative liner notes, transcriptions for guitar of Bach’s music have been done since the 19th century, so the overtly familiar feel of the material presented here should come as no surprise.
What is surprising (at least, for someone unfamiliar with his work) is the beauty of Mr. Devine’s playing; subtle and dynamic, his interpretations of music originally intended for cello, violin or chorus mark him as a worthy inheritor of a tradition founded by Tarrega and Segovia.
This recording is highly recommended to guitar students and lovers of baroque music, but would somebody please take a decent photograph of the artist? The picture included in the liner notes makes him look like a soccer hooligan who’s sneaked backstage and stolen a guitar.
