Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
The old adage about playing Mozart on the piano -- that it is more difficult for adults than for children -- applies equally to Bach's works for keyboard. The composer's mechanical rhythms and abstract melodies present interpretive challenges, even to seasoned performers, and only a few pianists active today Andras Schiff and Murray Perahia, for example have the necessary musical temperament to bring Bach's music fully to life. Angela Hewitt is such a pianist, and this recording of assorted keyboard works by Bach, ranging from youth to maturity, captivates from beginning to end. The piano was new and uncommon in the early 18th century, and Bach, accordingly, composed most of his keyboard works for the harpsichord, an instrument that allows no dynamic and minimal timbral control. Hewitt, taking full advantage of her Steinway grand piano, imbues Bach's works with a broad range of tone colors and dynamics, and the results are striking. The sound is bright and sharply defined, with a vibrancy that grabs one's attention. The tempos are lively and the articulation precise. From the opening work, the familiar Italian Concerto, Hewitt seizes the listener with the vigor of her performance. The driving first movement is loosely in the style of a Baroque Italian opera overture thus the title. The doleful middle movement flows tenderly, and the work closes with a spirited dash of a movement, a gleeful cascade of rapid notes. As with her acclaimed Goldberg Variations, Hewitt once again proves herself a persuasive Bach interpreter.
